GD moisture. Wish it'd spread out. Crazy snow like a mofo this afternoon. I'm waiting for Travis's review on the flick. My wife would really like to see it, looks cool to me. There's a lot more pernicious influences on youth today than what this movie seems to be about.

I heard another translation for "Ingwe." It means "walking pernicious influence."

Didn't we all.
But point being if you can read, holy [bleep] there's a lot more messed up story lines than this. Lord of the flies is an easy one. lots of other ones. I just hope the movie will inspire some of these kids to read.

Scott:
You are a good man. You need to take that to the bank. What I can tell you in this life is that we will make make mistakes. It is what we do with those mistakes that marks us. In this case you read something that someone misread or misintepreted and formed an opinion.
You have the good grace of God and the forutitous circumstance to read and interpret for yourself. And I agree, as an English and German major I read not only "Lord of the Flies", but also "The Geatest Game", but also "Nacht Schalfen die Ratten Doch", and I think in spite or 4 years at VMI and my own issues, I turned out ok-same for you.
Literature, should we allow it to do what it is intended to do, is instructive, informative and entertaining. How and in what way we are open to that instruction is what is critical. None of this is intended to be critical of you, because I know what I have seen of you and you are a good man. Just read the real McCoy and then let's talk. I haven't read the series either, but I will and would be happy to discuss.
Best regards and wishing you and your family the best,
Bill

Very good movie.
Way too deep for most of the kids in the theatre to see it. It isn't a violent film.
The films message seemed to lean toward the fact that a society can become as disgusting as they choose to. Think Gladiator, meets Lord of the Flies meets Downfall.

Ok, just got home from watching it.
First, it is kind of violent. They do a decent job of kinda showing the violence, and kinda not. Violent, but not gory. If that makes sense. People die, there is blood, but not so much that it makes it stupid.
As for the story, I'll try not to spoil it, but if you don't want to know the general plot line, stop here.
My wife has read the books and says this movie follows the first book fairly well. And ends where the first book ends. That's a problem, more on that later.
It's clearly a representation of both Rome and the possible future of the U.S. It's basically a central government (socialist/communist) that has complete control over everything. The country is divided into districts according to their skills, with a rich lavish capitol city that basically controls all. After a quelled uprising in the past, there is a "gladiator" style game every year as a reminder of both how powerful and merciful the government is. Kids are selected from each district to battle it out in a two week survival type game. The winner gets rich, the losers all die throughout the game. During this particular game, one of the characters begins to defy the rules and slowly fight back.
That's where the problem lies. The defiance is subtle. And without explanation, most kids will miss it. It's in later books, apparently, that the new revolution/uprising really takes place (more movies, more money). As a stand alone movie, it's a gladiator battle between young teens that could easily be taken as disgusting. And the premise surely is.
The moral behind this whole story is that a central government that rules with an iron fist will suppress the people into deplorable conditions to the point that fighting back is a death sentence, but not fighting back is just as bad or worse.
Overall, the message is a good one. Don't become slaves to the government, don't sacrifice your fellow man for a small handout from the very people oppressing you, fight for the rights of humans even at a great cost, etc.... Problem is that you won't get this message until the later books/movies.
In the end, I liked it. And look forward to the other movies and obvious plot line of the people revolting and defeating evil. As for this particular movie, it comes down to what it always comes down to. Parents deciding if their children can understand the message and understand the violence. Hopefully with guidance from said parents. It's gonna be an individual choice. Can you teach them all this without this type of movie? Sure. But taking them to a movie that they're begging to see may be an easy way to get their attention and bring the topic up. Or not. It's down to individual parenting again.

Watched it last night with my fiance. Was entertained. Was a decent watch and cant say I was bored. Enjoyed it and would watch it again.
It seemed very similar to the later stages of the Roman Empire. It was violent but not as violent as most modern movies.
For those that want to link it to political agendas......get a life. Its a friggin movie. Its entertainment. Make of it what you want. I enjoyed it.
If you go through life as a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Just got back from seeing it. I haven't read the book(s), never even heard of them until this movie. Your review covers the story well, I was struck by the vast difference between the poverty of the outlying districts and the decadence of the capitol. But politics and message aside, it's a darn good movie all by itself. They did a very good job imagining the future, the costuming and set decoration were first rate. At the heart of it, no book or movie is any good unless it's a good story well told, and this is a good story very well told. Some parts were a little predictable but that's okay, I mean, right from the beginning you know who's going to survive(maybe ). Violent but only as much as needed to tell the story, not gratuitously gory, no profanity to speak of, I'd take the average 12 year old to see it without worry. I guarantee they are exposed to much worse on standard cable TV. I definitely give it the "Good Excuse to Eat Overpriced Popcorn" seal of approval.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

A lot of the scenes were shot in my home county here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Transylvania County is known as The Land of Waterfalls, and we have lots of hiking trails here.
Hope this theme don't play out in real life, the way things are going for many around here.
I am active in a food bank ministry here, and it keeps getting harder to put food together for the growing lines of people without work.
