I need a small bolt action for a rifle I wish to have built for a small wildcat I am working on, and need opinions and information on the Mini Mark X. Some years ago these actions were imported to the USA by Interarms and have returned from Charles Daly. They have as far as I know always been made in Zastavia, Yugoslavia. Anything you can provide about quality, strength, and functionallity will be appreciated.

I'm a bit like you Fireplug, these little mini Mark X's always intrigued me. Should make for a really neat little rifle.

I have one in 223, stocked in a modest piece of english as a small walk-around rifle. It is classy, accurate, completely dependable and just makes me feel good when I carry it. I'm looking at the only possible improvement, the same thing in SS...
I saw these at the SHOT Show and they appear to be the exact same action as the Mark X. These make a fine little hunting rifle. High-Tech makes a stock also. This would make a dandy varmint-carry rifle.

Thanks All,

Hearing that these actions are well regarded by others, including a Riflesmith like Charlie Sisk, and well enough liked by their owners that Sitka is considering a second is good news. I really like idea of these Mini Mark Xs, but just did not have the knowledge about and experience with them to go ahead with confidence. I guess now is the time to get to work ordering one, and the reamers.

Question... Having never seen one, I read in the Jerry's catalog, that these are a 98 Mauser, but made for the 223 and 7.62x39. What other rounds might fir in this action?
Anything on the 223 case, I'm sure, but can the bolt open up to fit a 308 size rim? ~~~Suluuq

Where would one get a semi-inletted stock blank for one?

Rolly,
MPI, Bell & Carlson, Boyd's, and High Tech all produce stocks. MPI and High Tech appear to be the best stocks, but are also the more expensive both in fitting and finishing effort as well as dollars. The B&C will likely be my compromise.

Rusty Gunn,
They have a version for each of four head sizes .22 Hornet, .223, 7.62x39, and 22-250 with the feed rails and magasines properly set up. C.O.L. is limited to about 2.32" in the longest 22-250 version. They are other than size very like any M98, but with a simplified extractor. Please, post a link to the catalog you mention.

My wildcat round that I intend to use in one will stretch the little actions usefulness to big game. The ".416 The Americas Stalker (tm)" is a .240 Weatherby case, chosen for its' belt to headspace on and .473 head size, cut to 1.850" and necked for .416 bullets. Three interior balistics programs aggree in predicting 1750fps for 335-350 grain bullets in a 20" barrel at very moderate pressures. The performance will approximate the .45/70, gaining back some of what it gives away in starting energy to the above SAAMI .45/70 loads with better SD and BC bullets. At the NRA convention Charles Daly's Cheif Gunsmith, Jim Heverling, and I successfully tested the rounds fit and feeding.

Rusty, the PPC cartridges will work any place a 7.62x39 does. I am putting together a small Sako that was a 222 into a 6MM PPC.

Fireplug... the Jerry's catalog I speak of is for FFL holders, hense not sent to anyone for the asking. I used to have an FFL, but still get the catalogs, of which I can order non-firearms products. I've only been to their web page once, and it needed some sort of pass word or another from FFL holders. ~~~Suluuq

The B&C is heavy and ill fitting!

The hi tech from Bansner's requires a lot of finish work,
but is a GREAT lightweight stock.

But....IMHO, a standard factory CZ 527 american is better
for about the same money spent! There are several posters here, including me, who have 527s that shoot less than 1/2 moa!

I built a 17 Mach IV on a Mini Mauser action. It's a good gun, but the action can't hold a candle to the CZ-527 action. The bolt on the Mini Mauser is very uncooperative. It binds and is just not smooth. Where the bolt on the CZ is as smooth as glass. The trigger on the CZ is much better than the Mini Mauser and if you buy the CZ in the American version, you get yourself a great stock all for about $450.

You can read all about my Mini Mauser project on my web site

I built a .223 up on the Mini Mauser action, Stocked with a boyd's semi inletted stock, barrel 24 inch 1.5 contour ER Shaw. I chose this because I had a craving for a walking varminter that would shoot. The 24 inch barrel is offset by the short action so the balance is really nice, the looks are right on, the trigger is fully adjustable. I have shot a 5 shot group at 200 yards with 4 under a dime and the fifth a flyer a half inch out. The negatives would have to be the bolt as mentioned above is somewhat sloppy but overall satisfaction with the project is excellent. I am considering another in 250 savage AI if that says anything... I would agree the CZ 527 is a better action without a doubt.

I'd love to see something like this in 35 Remington.

And I guess should ask if the action would be beefy enough for this cartridge and its pressure?

I had, just sold, a Mark X mini-mauser in 7.62x39, it was a very nice rifle and the action was very slick. I can not find a thing not to like about this little action, however, it was built-up by a gunsmith with a timney trigger, two-position safety, and trued so you would expect it to be nice.

I handled a Mauser Model 3000 in 223 yesterday, nice little
rifle. I have handled the larger calibers on this action and
they were pretty smooth. I guess they didnt make alot of
this model, most people want a "traditional" Mauser.

I've heard bad things from a good friend who builds custom long range rifles. He also said that getting parts was extremely problematic. Mind you that could be owing to getting things across the border to Canada.
