Got this #1 as soon as the chambering was available.Lot of guys seem to covet the AI version these days but the velocities outta this Ruger are barking on the heels of the big 7 with 140gr TTSX's.Probably my all time favorite you won't be disappointed! wink

It is my favorite. As soon as I get the rest of the funds together I'm having our own Redneck build me one. I got the McMillan, Mt. Rifle stock (snow camo), in a few weeks back.

It will be on a Rem 700 ss, ADL action.

Currently I own a full custom .280, not a 7mm magnum anything. That's because I'm well aware of the fact that the .280 isn't that far from the 7mm magnums. But if you try to argue that you can duplicate the 7mm magnum's pefromance with a .280, even a .280AI, you are only doing so by loading the .280 or the .280AI at higher pressures.
For example, you post maximum loads for the 7mm magnum as 2950 fps. with a 140 gr. bullet. That's nonsense. I've loaded both of my 7mm Remington magnums to 3250-3300 fps. plus with 140 gr. bullets, and killed game in 90 degree temperatures with them as well.
Over the years I've learned I don't have to put up with the extra blast and recoil of the 7mm magnums to push a 160 gr. bullet plenty fast enough to kill quite well anything I want to shoot at. I've done so with the 160 gr. Nosler Partitions at a mere 2680 fps. My current rifle pushes them easily at 2800 fps. That's plenty.
Nice round. But magic, no. E

eremicus, please avoid bringing logic and common sense to this thread. You know if you took a .280 and wrote "AI" on the side of the rifle and put a McSwirly stock on it (with a Jolly Rogers on the stock), it would immediately outdo the Big 7's best efforts and shoot groups that were smaller than the diameter of the bullet. Regardless of the hack that was running the trigger.
I'm a .280 fan myself but I understand that if you can't kill it at 2800fps, you ain't going to at 3200fps. smile

Have been shooting the 280 for about 20+ years. I have harvest a many of deer with this caliber here in NC . My favorite load is with the 140gr. ballistic tip.

I need an excuse to pick up a 280 Remington, but only if you talk me into it!!

Is the 280 Remington your favorite rifle chambering? And do you get 2890 fps with a 160 grain load?

Sigh...

Dogger,

Having owned and shot a 7mm Rem mag. for years, I now only own my .280, and a .280 RCBS Imp.

The .280 is built on a pre'64 M70 action, with a Pac Nor 22" bbl, a Bansner stock, Talley LW mounts, and a 3.5-10 Leupold scope.
I shoot 140 grain bullets exclusively thru it- Nosler AB's, BT's, and Barnes TSXes. All are very accurate.
My best hunting loads are the TSX at 3050 MV, and the Nosler AB at 2970 fps. Recoil is so light that it's never a consideration-not always true with the 7 mags.
To date, I've taken mule deer, whitetails, the biggest elk of my life, red stag, Himalayan Tahr and Chamois with this rifle and loads. The Nosler AB, in particular, performs in excellent fashion on these species.

I find these .280 Rem.- 7 MM Rem. Mag. comparisons laughable, having owned and shot both. For my money, the rest of my hunting career will be very well served with the .280's.

Yeah Paul it is a way old thread. I wonder if one of the latest posters even noticed he had posted quite extensively on it 6 years ago. Its almost like the circle of life on here sometimes.

Grinning Woody, have never seen one so marked.

I imagine if we get another four years of socialism, rifles will have to be marked for everything they aren't chambered to...

We have a 280, a 280 Ackley(another almost finished) and a 7 Rem Mag.

22" 280 does 2950, 24" 280AI does near 3200, 24" 7mm Rem Mag does 3325, all with a 140 TSX or TTSX

280AI and 7 Mag running Rel22, H4350 in the 280.

note: we also chronyed a new FN built Model 70 Fwt 270 at 3215 with a 140 Accubond....there's 280AI velocity in a standard 270 case. There all peas in a pod.

Love the old thread. Not only do I remember when Remington renamed/reintrocuced the 7mm Express I bought one. In 1979 I purchased a Remington 700 ADL in 7mm Express and that is what I have hunted with since then.

All but four of the deer, elk and antelope that I have brought to bag were killed with this rifle. I bought this caliber because it wasn't boring.

You guys are all missing the point......The best thing about a 280 is that it's not a 270.

So get one life is too short to wait forever!

Got my first centerfire, a 7mm RM in 1982. About 20 years later I started collecting some want-to-haves. (Never really found that I needed anything else)

Along the way I became interested in the .280 Rem, in part because I had a bunch of 7mm bullets lying around and in part because I viewed it as a slightly reduced recoil .30-06 and an improved .270 Win. Early last year I found a deal I couldnt pass up a double win, .280 Rem in a Ruger #1 at a great price.

[Linked Image]

Even with the 26 barrel on the .280 Rem Im not getting 7mm RM velocities - but Im close enough that I really dont care and would happily use it any place Id use my 7mmRM.

Don't delay.

Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I bought and handloaded for my first .280 in 1981, have had five good rifles so chambered and currently own three of these. My favourites are built on Brno 21 actions and I have two of these plus two more actions to build on....I could well end up with five custom .280s and I honestly consider this round about "perfect" for most BC hunting I have done and witnessed.

I like 160 NPs, have some ABs loaded for when the rain stops and am also going to load some 162 Nosler SBs, which I wish I could find a few hundred more of.

I like the .280 a bit more than the .270 and have had about 15 .270s, have three custom P-64 Fwts now.....don't know why, there is NO REAL difference, but, give me a .280 and a .338WM and I am a happy old geezer!
