Since it is universally known that W 760 and H 414 are pretty much the same powders...

is there another powder that is just repackaged W 748???

certain barrel I had did real well with it...and has a lot of high miles on it with W 748... which is not as readily available locally as it use to be...

since all of these powders come out of ST Marks FL, I figure there has to be an equivalent...

thanks in advance for anyone 'in the know'..

best regards
seafire

Not that I know of. Contrary to some beliefs, H335 is NOT W748. My source for that is Chris Hodgdon.

yeah Rocky, I trust W 748 hands down...

H 335 I don't...have seen too many inconsistencies... and as I have posted, the only problems that I have had in the 223, was with H 335...

twice a standard load of 25 grains with a 55 grain bullet, blew the case bad enough to split the stock...

so since ANYTHING almost will shoot well in a 223, I use anything BUT H 335...

was wondering how close BLC2 or TAC might be... or if either are just W748 in a different box...

TAC is made in Belgium, and is not close. It's a 'quicker' powder.

Seafire,

When Hodgdon ran out of the old mil-surp H335 in the 1990's they started having it made elsewhere. I can't remember where, exactly, but the new stuff was a LOT faster. A friend bought an 8-pound jug and traded me maybe 3 pounds for something or other.

Neither of us knew it was newly manufactured and when I used the same powder charge I'd been using for years with 50-grain bullets in the .223 there were primer leaks and about a 200-fps gain in velocity. Had to back it down 2 grains (which is a LOT in the .223) to match the old .223 load's velocity. One of the guys at Hodgdon eventually explained what was happening.

I suspect the same thing occurred to a few other folks who ran out of the older stuff.

I don't believe there is a powder that has been acknowledged as having the same relationship to 748 as the 760 - 414 relationship.
BL-C2 is probably as close as you will come. Baseing my comment on the data published in the older Hodgon data manual #26 wherein they list virtually identical loads for to two powders in the cartridges that both have a practical application. I know that their data has changed since that book was printed and now their data for 748 is pretty skimpy. My experience with the two powders in the 223 has been they are very similar, haven't used them both in another cartridge so can't comment further experience wise. Funny how personal experiences differ. Win 748 was one powder that I had some seriously negative results with which lead me to quit using it.

As mentioned, BL-C(2), TAC. I would add Accurate 2460 to those.

Don't know. But I have found that 748 is slower than either AA2460 or TAC in my .308's, not faster than the Ramshot Burn Rate Chart shows. It, 748, seems to need a warmer primer as well.
Just goes to show that one needs to work up cautiously when changing powders. E

All burn-rate charts are approximations, since burn rate can vary with the same powder in different cartridges, or even in the same cartridge with different bullets.

H335 is made in St Marks, same plant as WW748, but, as Rocky said, not the same powder. It's faster, by quite a bit, than WW748.

I've used a pile of H335 in .458 Win Mag and my .45-70's. By far, the best powder for heavy bullets in each. AA2230 is faster. AA 2460 is close to H335, as is TAC.

My source of info is top guy at Hodgdon plus personal experience.

I don't know about the .223 as it's been a while since I've loaded one, but for .458" it's hard to beat H335 (except the 460 WBY).

There are 3 reasons why I think 748 doesn't cross to anything else:

1) Hodgy says so
2) It performs differently than similar powders (BL-C(2) is an example of a very similar, but less flexible, powder)
3) The 'factory' number for Winchester 748 is WC748.

How do I know #3? That's what is stamped in red on the outer, sealed, Winchester-labeled shipping boxes of the 8-pound containers I get from the UPS man. smile
