I am wanting to work up a loads for a 35/348 using a 225gr. and 250gr. bullets, but since there isn't any data available would I be safe working up to max loads for a .348 Win. with the same weight bullets. I have loaded for some time, but I have never loaded anything that wasn't a "book" load. Thanks, Tiler

That approach should work, within a certain limit that I'd prefer to avoid. The optimum powders for the .348 case and .348 bullets may not be optimum for the .348 case and larger bores. To start from scratch, I've long used the old "Powley Computer for Handloaders," which in recent years I've retired in favor of (first) Wayne Blackwell's "Load from a Disk" and (more recently) Hartmut Broemel's "QuickLOAD" software. Wayne's software is helpful. Hartmut's is awesome.

<br>After checking my Quickload program, the 35/348 Win is listed in their data. If it wasn't you could still enter case measurements, water cap. etc, and work out a load for it.

<br>I think you will find that you "get what you pay for". The Load From A Disk" costs about 1/3 of the Quick Load which may be up in the $179 range.

<br>Some of the loads listed exceed this pressure limit, even though Bill mentioned they were recommended maximum.

<br>I would recommend going to slower powders ie. AA XMR4350, H4350, IMR4350, Rel-19 etc. Using the slower group, the case should be near full capacities, yielding higher velocities, below maximum pressures .According to Quickload , the XMR4350 has the best propellant burnt %, and highest ballistic efficiency. I have tried loads on this basis though and ended up settling on another powder for reasons of accuracy.
<br> Ultimately you have to decide on the make of bullet you will be trying, as this makes a big difference to load pressures. You should also determine the cartridge overall lenght with this bullet and distance from lands before anyone could hazard a guess for a starting load.

<br>Load From A Disk groups powders into classes. In the case of the 35/348 Winchester they display class 9 and 9A. I gave only class 9 for the sake of expediency. Class 9A recommends:

<br>IMR 4046, H380, AA2520, N140 and VARGET. These two classes are the only recommendations available. The software does not provide for the user to enter powder preferences. The creators pre-programmed these selections which are un-editable.

<br>I only had the demo version of Load from a disk, and that was a good while ago. These powders you mention would no doubt work , and come to think of it, Tilers rifle is a Mauser.As long as the case is up to it , the rifles action would be. The 348 and 35/348 list the max pressures of 46412. The 348 Ackley gives a max of 45991. No doubt these pressures were intended for the Model 71 Winchester lever action.

<br>Quickload shows lower pressure and higher velocity with the 4350 , and W760 , and Rel-19 powders. If this were my rifle , I would probably start a couple grains under book max for the 348, and slowly work up a few grains past, if there were no visible pressure signs. With the 26" barrel, this rifle should easily obtain 2600fps utilizing a 225 grain Nosler partion, and be a good stretch under the max pressure. Compressed maximum loads of 2700 fps, with this bullet and AA XMR 4350, or 2550 with the Nosler 250 grain. An excellent big game cartridge.

The Siamese is supposed to be a very strong action, but I don't want to test it to see! I'm hoping to get lucky enough to get an elk tag this fall.......there's only ten tags, so its kinda like the lottery, but who knows! A .358 225 gr. bullet should do a great job. Thanks again, Tiler
