I've seen that the manuals show IMR-4350 and H-4831sc as a top powders in the 284 Winchester. And I have seen/read that RL-17 is another velocity performance powder.
I don't seem to find much about H-4350.

I am looking for a powder that will give good density, isn't temp sensitive, consistent, moderate to high velocity with 140's, and have sifted the choices down to either H-4350 or H-4831sc.

Anybody have some experienced recommendations..?

Thank You.

Any others running H-4350 and/or H-4831 in their 284 Winchesters..?

I have found R17 to be superb in my 284 regarding both velocity and accuracy with both 140-gr and 150-gr bullets. Others here have tested it in cold weather and found it relatively temp insensitive. It works slightly better than H4350 in my rifle though that should be good also. I have not tested H4831 in mine.

I tried RL17 with 140, 150 and 154gr bullets and got good velocity with low ES, but lousy accuracy in my rifle. I just tried it with the 120ttsx and it looks very promising. A little tweaking with seating depth and a tenth of a grain or two and I should be there.

As with any specific gun, you gotta shoot it to know for sure.
H4350 worked good for me, but have settled on---
284 win with 120BT pushed by RL15
284 win with 160NP pushed by RL17
for my go to hunting loads.

Well, I burned a little H-4350 under some 140 NBT's this evening sparked by CCI Bench Rest primers in new W-W 284 Brass.

With light fading, and the chrony struggling to see, my last recorded velocity was with 56.0 grains giving 3115 fps. Nuttin wrong with that..! smile

58 grains showed slight cratering on the primer with a shiny bright spot at the extractor area of the case rim.

I'm calling 57 grain MAX for pressure in my rig.

Accuracy results to follow grin
