Just razzin' ya, brother. I can hardly talk... .300 Savage, .308, a pair of '06s, and H&H, RSAUM, WSM, Winchester, Weatherby, and RUM. Oh, and a .30-30.

Me too mad. Mine were numbered for case capacity or something. Some people...I pulled the tape off and sized them and tumbled the bastids and then shoot groups like this so wtf does it matter if one holds a hair more water than the other...:

.308 and .308mag both are excellent.
For a while I needed three of each... grin

Really smart and he'd have a 300WSM to go along with that pansy ass 270....grin

Seriously though if starting from scratch I'd follow Pat's lead and shoot/hunt a 308 w/155 Scenars.

Of course a 300 WSM and 180's at 3000fps doesn't suck for hunting, just wouldn't be as fun to practice with all the time.

I own several 308's, 30-06's and one 300 WSM. The 308's and 30-06's ain't for sale. The 300 WSM, I'm undecided on, only because I've not had it long enough to develop a load that I'm 100% sold on.

But I can see where it has the potential to do it all. It is the same size weight as my 308, gives me 99% of the velocity of a 300 win mag with less recoil, and I can always load it down to 30-06 performance and recoil levels.

Yes, because a 308W is often the next step up in power for a young shooter or Woman.

Yes, you need the 308 because one of these days when SHTF no matter how bad it gets, ammo will still be availible to those with initative and courage to act.Just like you need a 223,12 ga,45, 40,9mm ,38,and a 22lr. No further explanation needed.Besides they are fairly economical to shoot. Magnum Man

I've got both. They both shoot really tight groups. The 308 Win. is fun to shoot. The 300WSM is fun to shoot too.The 300WSM shoots much flatter. The 300WSM hits much harder. The 300WSM kicks a little harder, but it's not too bad.As good as the little 308 Win. is,the 300WSM is better and it's a 308 magnum and it will out perform the 308 Win.When I get ready to go hunting,I find it very hard to leave the 300WSM at home.

If I had to be a one and done kind of guy I'd go 300 shorty just cause there's times I like a bit more power for elk.

Aside from elk (and yeah I know the 308 is more than elky worthy) the 308 is all one needs.

So, I guess I'm saying that if one's into deer and deer and not much else then a 308 (or a 22/250) makes a lot of sense.

I built a fairly model perfecto 300 shorty mag, love it so I use it.

Lastly, for me it's more about the rifle than the round.

I've got both. Been target shooting all my life, most with .308. Been hunting for a few years here in CA, started with -06, figured out fast .308 was my friend. Easy to shoot, load, carry, cheap practice ammo/availability, great barrel life...

Someone put a bug up my butt a couple years ago to get a .300wsm. You know, more is always better?! Finally took it hunting just to try it out. Shot a pig at AM gray light from prone. All I remember was seeing orange, waking up a couple seconds later to the guide tapping me on the back and just being able to make out the words "good job". My ears were fuzzy for a while after.

I'm going to CO in Oct for elk, and now for the first time, I feel the need for the .300wsm, but even now not so sure (see my speed post on the elk channel).

BTW, there's a diametric difference between need and want!

YES. Just can't see turning a WSM into a 19 in. barreled carbine. Besides, I've got to have something to use several thousand rounds of .308 match brass in.
