So I want a good 45 acp and I have narrowed it down to the XD service compact, XDM 4.5, and the S&W M&P 45. They all feel about the same and have their own attributes that I like. The XD is the most economic, the XDM has a better trigger and is the smoothest, and the S&W is right between them but has the better design.
I have shot an XD and an XDM but not the M&P. The springers both shot dead nuts for me providing first round 20 yard Bullseyes, (never done that with any other gun.
What I am looking for is a gun or the range first, HD next, field carry, and occasional CC. So what do you guys think?
Whatever a 7x57 can do a 270 can do better.

M&P based on your criteria for use.

Well, I look at it this way. Any handgun I might carry for personal protection has to fit easily and naturally. That allows me to use it well, i.e. hit something, under stress and in a hurry. Right next to that is a good trigger. Hunting guns or target guns must also have a first class trigger as well as easily seen sights. Kinda nice to have all three, but that doesn't happen much. Yes, a good smith can fix short commings, so that is a consideration as well. E

I went to the gun shop a few minutes ago and had the lady at the counter put all three out side by side. I really like the smith but there are some details in how the slide meets up with the frame that I don't like. I could actually see straight through the gun under the slide, I have noticed this on several photos of the M&P's. I know I am being nit picky but I am a detailed person.
So now it's really down to the XD or XDM. The XD felt good and the trigger was good. The XDM felt better and the trigger was better but is it worth the extra $80?

I have the XDM 45 and it is very accurate. Only upgrade I have done to it is have the Trijicon HD night sights installed. You will not be disappointed in the XDM. Easy to field strip and clean.

You'll regret not getting the one you prefer. In the overall scheme of things, $80 is insignificant.

Mine XDM 45 Shots like a dream. Gets better everytime I pull the trigger. It is with me all the time when able to carry it. In town or out hunting. If you reload PM me and I have a good target load that shoots real good in 3 XDM 45 that I know of. Enjoy!

Had a XD once and was very happy with it, I'm sure the XDM will just be more of the same.
