Two times a year, the sun sets at the proper declination to cast the shadow of the West Mitten upon the East Mitten. This year, some light clouds gave some color to the sky, but also diffused the sun's rays and lessened the shadow. ![[Linked Image]](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/dkoepsel/Monument%20Valley/Ed800MittenShadow2012_012.jpg) After viewing the Mitten Shadow event Friday evening, I continued north into southern Utah to visit a couple of photogenic ruins. Each required an easy 45 minute hike down a canyon. House on Fire Ruin. Late morning light reflects off the sandstone in front of the ruin to give the layered edges of stone above the ruin a flame appearance. ![[Linked Image]](http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a390/dkoepsel/Utah/Ed800HouseOnFireRuin_236_01.jpg) Fallen Roof Ruin. These granaries are located about 100' above the canyon bottom. A few small corn cobs were still on the floor of one compartment. ... and it is a dang long way from northern Sweden too!

John, Laurent Martres has a great photographic guide book for southern Utah for when you make it to the southwest.
Matt, I know you wanted to meet there a few years ago. I was not expecting the ruins to be so interesting in person. Temps were just about perfect last weekend.
M, those canyons in southern Utah have many ruins for those who like to hike and explore. One has to wonder how many other ruins are as photogenic as these two.

These are beautiful! What are the two times per year that the this occurs? I'd like to mark my calendar. March 30 and September 13 are the prime dates. A day on either side is OK also. The key is to have a clear sky on the western horizon. Clouds have blocked a few mitten shadows for me.

Thanks for responding so quick! And I've been looking at your photos on your website...love them. I made a trip to Antelope Canyon with my father a few years ago on a photo trip, so I really enjoy your photos from there.

You didn't mention what camera? Thanks. Same camera as before, Nikon D90. I see that Nikon discontinued it. Wonder if they will release a D7100 or D400 this year with the 24MP sensor.

Boy I love those ruins! Seem's you mentioned you were in one? That would be a hoot! Beautiful shot's.
I just had a thought. Imagine your one of those indians. You've got a loin cloth and a spear and build that for a home. Bad enought that, they last a lot longer than modern house's!
