I posted photos several months ago of a work in progress of a full custom 22lr built on a MAS 45 by Dean Zollinger. The rifle is for a customer of gun maker John Bolliger.

A couple weeks ago he received the rifle back from the engraver for bluing. I was able to take some photos of the metal in the white. For your enjoyment I have posted photos of the great craftsmanship. It was a real pleasure seeing this rifle from beginning to completion.

Please feel free to comment. I know Dean is curious to hear what the rest of the shooting community thinks of this rifle.

this is going to be surprising for me to say but possibly... over embellished? Why are the tall scope mount blocks engraved?? Once the rings are installed they will never be seen? And giraffes on a 22LR???? Its clearly a beautiful set-up and the work is well done but I am not sure I understand it all??

if i was the owner I would also have some issues with the engraving if I paid well for it as there seems to be some issues of it not necessarily matching across an individual piece... maybe I am just being too picky... with a quick glance its a nice piece...

I asked a lot of those same questions myself. But the engraver did the engraving per the clients specs. I would assume that the particular image has some meaning to the client.

In reference to the scope blocks being covered - what you are seeing are the removable filler plates that slip into the Smithson dovetails when the scope is not installed. The plates slide out and the dovetail on the bottom of the rings slide in.

Pretty elaborate....obviously well done.An heirloom piece and mated to high class walnut with Zollinger's impeccable great stock work,it should be a beautiful little rifle.

If the embellishment gives the owner what he wants, good for him....why we build custom rifles in the first place.

Exquisite work and if indeed done per the owners specifications then he should be very pleased.
Not to my tastes but it wasn't made for me.

The work looks super high quality, I'm impressed. Dean's son is building me a 338-06 at the moment. The last time I saw the rifle it was looking better than I had hoped for. Really looking forward to it getting finished.
