Shooting a gift of a new to me .270 Remington 721 the cases would not extract. Factory Rem Corelock 130's. They weren't stuck the bolt head just doesn't grip them.
Can the bolt be rebuilt, extractor be replaced? Is this a gunsmith job or a simple replacement? If so where can parts be found? Is there some other cause?

A lot of the times it's the extractor on the remingtons (700, 721, 722 etc....). I'd also check the plunger for the ejector and make sure there arn't any brass shavings in there getting in the way of things.....I went through the same thing on a rem 700 and 722 so I've just about given up on anything that's not CRF. I know you remington fans don't like hearing this but oh well......chit happens..
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

As Tony noted, the 721 uses a different extractor than the 700.
The 721 extractor is no longer available and NOS ones are getting extremely rare and expensive if you find one.
I've often wondered if the bolt head portion of 700 bolt could be brazed/soldered onto a 721 et al bolt.

The problem shown is why I left Remmies in 1955 and have never looked back I've tried them in rem 700 and 722 and both had extraction problems but some say that is bs....The 700 was a brand new bdl that was a thing of beauty and the 722 was an old 300 savage. Both had problems!!! Notice I haven't said anything about my 788 (don't want to jinx myself), already have the typical trigger/safety fire problem with that one.....Got the timney ordered (I mean waiting on a backorder  ).....  .

You know it just dawned on me.............. I never hear anyone badmouth a Sako extractor, until it's put in a Remington....

The bolt face is clean. Nothing looks out of place but I've never really looked at one before. It will not grip and hold a cartridge, not when it's in the action or outside if you just try to snap it in.
I'm not sure, can I use a 700 or sako exractor in this 721.
The gun was a gift so I can afford to put a little money into it, I guess a trip to the local gunsmith is in order.

Thanks The 721 takes a different extractor than the 700. They are getting pretty scarce, that's why people resort to the sako type extractor modification. Many deem that fix as dangerous though....Depends on who you talk to. I'd take it to the smith and hope he has a new extractor tucked away somewhere....Good luck with it....

Buy a new bolt from PT&G and have your 'smith fit your choice of extractor and check/adjust headspace. I've installed riveted 700 extractors in two different Rem 722's. Not a hard job. Takes a little tweaking on the fit and tension but they work fine when installed properly. You have to locate and drill the rivet hole very carefully.

put a sako or a ar15 extractor in and be done with it, $85 your problems will be solved, if you find someone with a 721 extractor they will charge you about $30 for it and thats no promise that it will work all the time. I used sakos and ar15 extractors and like the ar15 the best
