When is early turkey opener? Is it this weekend? Oh boy, if so I better get my butt in gear. Need license, gun (borrowing from dad and never been shot), talk to guy to see if I can hunt on his land (where turkeys are thick).

I am out of order until further notice. My "stupid people" filter needs cleaning and my "give a damn" batteries have run out.

When we moved into our 11 year old house 15 years ago we had a drain problem. It turns out that the drain pipe to the sewer was clogged with an invasive root branch from the maple tree in the front. They had to dig a ten foot deep hole four feet wide and six feet long to get to the problem. The man explained that once a root gets in thru a crack or joint in the pipe it gets beau coup nourishment from all the human waste and from the phosphors in the detergents and just goes wild.It was quite a problem but they fixed it.We have never had another problem.I also later had the maple tree cut down.
Turkey season started here in South Carolina last Sunday,April 1st.I have tags and a place to go but just have not gone yet.

Muffy, you don't have a venting issue, you have a clogged line issue. You need a service man with a power snake.

And you're just wasting time and money with most chemicals.

Call a service shop that knows what their doing, roto-rooter or such.

Actually, yes. When we wash clothes, ocaisionally the drain in the laundry room does emit an odor.

No problem with the toilets or kitchen sink though. Just the bathrooms.

T, if you are getting a sewer odor in the house, you very well could have a venting issue.

IF the venting is not working properly in your Drainage system, then as the wastewater flows down the pipe, this wastewater can pull (syphon) the water out of your p-trap.

The purpose of the water in the trap is to form a liquid seal which prevents sewer gas from entering the house.

The only other reason to lose your trap seal is from evaporation, but this takes some time to happen. If your smelling the odor in a room which has water running on a normal basis ( laundry room included), then evaporation is not likely the issue. Most likely improper venting is sucking the trap seal downstream with the wastewater.

If you smell gas in a room, or floor drain that doesn't get used often, add water as needed to the trap, or add 1 cup of cooking oil to the drain, oil doesn't evaporate like water.

T, 1 last question, as far as this "smelly odor", Is Jared Allen or Brett Favre living with you? whistle

I'm not the one wasting time and money, it is the landlord. If it was up to me I would have called someone right away to take care of the problem. Since I am not the one "in charge" it was not up to me. Now the plumber can't make it here till Friday. I told him about it on Sunday. Trust me, it sucks. If it was up to me (which it was not) It would have been acted on right away.

Kenneth,

That is exactly what I do. I dump a bit of water down the drain before I wash clothes. If I remember that is.

That is quite possible. I'll have to check the gutter for Favre. laugh

I had a smell I was sure was "sewer gas smell" soon after building our house. Turns out it was the zinc anode in the water heater reacting with iron bacteria or some such thing. Plumber replaced the anode with an aluminum one and to this day - no odor. New to me. Thought I'd share.

That is very common in this part of the country. Most people have never heard about changing out the rod.

I thought they were magnesium?

I screwed mine out, cut the rod off and screwed the plug head back in the tank many years ago, the rod is still leaning in the corner next to the water heater.

You aren't THAT far south...

Anyway, that's the cue around here. Everything is way out of whack this year however. Last 4 nights have been hitting 25F and all the oaks, apples, serviceberry and paw paws are in full bloom. Or they were. Now they are full whatever. It is going to be a really ugly year for mast crops around here.

Turkey season is probably going to be more or less a bust too. frown

Besides a lot of folks loosing fruit crops, this will be the second year running that the acorn crop has failed. It will do nothing good for squirrels and turkeys and lots of other things. And we are just getting turkeys expanding onto our property too. I hope they can find something else to eat this fall.
