I was lucky enough to read an advance copy. The article on fire building is terrific, and I really enjoyed the article on the year the snow came as well.

Great first issue Ed, looking foward to the next one. You cannot get this kind of quality information in the regular hunting mags. Thats also what I am liking about it, not really your typical hunting magizine like the rest of them. More focus on skills, backcountry gear/travel and storys, not all of it related to hunting. I would say it is a ezine for the "outdoorsman". Someone who does not even hunt would benefit and enjoy reading this journal.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I'd like some feedback as I start the next issue. How much content do you want? Is there a point where it is too large for a single issue?

Also, did many of you print it out? I had one request to not have color background as it really burned through the color print cartridges.

Just want to make it as good as I can.

You can post or PM your comments.

Thanks!

I never got back and posted on this. Really appreciated the first issue myself. This was the first time I've seen in print what every experienced fire builder knows -- you have to gradually build in fuel size or you will smother the fire. There is no such thing as "tinder", "kindling", "fuel". Loved the story of course. I've heard it told many times and never get tired of hearing it.

The reviews of gear that may not have gotten much press are helpful, but I would really focus on skills rather than gear. The fire article was a good example of "here is what you are trying to accomplish, and btw, here is the gear I've found useful in accomplishing that goal". I'd keep that skill focus as much as possible. I'd probably even change the format so that the gear recommendations are literal sidebars to the main content about the skills.

A skill focus instead of a gear focus is the big edge your publication has over others.

I agree on staying skills based, possibly add in trips or adventures and what was packed and worked and what did not for the particular trip.
