Do you folks favor one type of hanger system over another? I have 5 shoulder mounts arriving soon. Waterbuck size down to impala. What say you?

Depends upon the weight. Very light stuff I use the heavy duty picture hangers.

On the medium stuff I will use one of the 1/4" toggle bolts. I add a fender washer and nut onto the bolt before inserting it into the wall. I tighten the nut with just enough bolt protruding to hang the mount on.

On heavier items I will attach a 1"x12" board to two studs and hang the mount on a lag bolt in the 1"x12".

Works for me but YMMV.

You can purchase a metal wall bolt that has wood screw threads on one end and SAE threads on the other. They come in various thickness from 1/4" to up to 1". These I thread into a stud with a nut on the other end. Then I hang the mount on this metal stud. Be sure to angle the metal stud upward for better integrity. Has worked well for my Kudu, Impala, Gemsbok, Aoudad and more. MTG

HAving worked in the taxidermy business since I've been in my teens, the easy answer/ solution is the "L" shaped lag screws that come in various sizes. Pre drill the hole in the stud, then with vise grips turn in the lag screw to the depth needed as close as possible. These work flawlessly and are cheap and easy. I've got 100% of my trophies hanging with these, from impala and wild boar to All the big African game I have.

The only hangup with these, is the same with any screw in system using a stud. You need a very good stud finder, and mark both edges of the stud, being certain that you screw into the middle of that wood. Screwing into the edge of the wood stud will be a problem.

The "L" shape lag screws work great. I use them for all my wall mounts.
My taxidermist drills a fairly large hole in the back of the mounts, with an "L" bracket inverted to form a V over the hole. Makes it fairly easy to hoist the mount to the wall and find the lag screw with a one-man effort.

What is an "L" shaped lag? The only thing I can think of is the type used to hang gates. What say you?

I am finishing building a game room next to our house,, 600 sq ft inside and 10 ft walls vault to 14 ft ceiling .
When preplanning this, knowing all my african animals will go there , we lined all walls with 1/2 plywood then sheet rock on top . Dont have to find no studs , just hang anything wherever you want.
Now I have wall space to fill, time to plan the next safari smile

That's exactly what I did. Sick of trying to arrange my nature art around stud location. When we re-built the house, trophy room got lined completely with 1/2" plywood. I did put a 2x10 in between the studs for a moose. Which I got a few years later !
