Expensive trophy done in by cheep rug??? During the weekend's A-Day festivities, a parent of a current player tripped on a rug that was under the display case and the Waterford Crystal football crashed to the ground shattering into a million little pieces. Linky

Florida's got smashed back in 2008, as I recall, but it was the trophy from the 2006 season. They also had a couple of them stolen in recent years--probably by recruits that didn't stick!

Why would they make them out of glass?? Not "just" glass, but crystal - it contains lead. Pb increases density, softens the glass to improve engraving and light refraction. But "boom" is not the sound that came to mind when I heard this news on the radio yesterday!

The saddest part of this is the fact that Waterford no longer exists. They went out of business last year after over a hundred years of making some of the finest crystal in the world. I'm not much for bling, but I have some original Irish-made Waterford wine glasses. They are works of art. I guess they'll just have to get Swarovski to make the replacement. Ed
