Hey guys, I looking at converting a normal Ruger 10/22 carbine into a 22 magnum for plinking purposes. Is it possible?
I have been looking at several internet sites and have not seen any 22 Magnum semi-auto for sale. I see many 10/22 LRs for sale. Hence, my question.
I currently have a bolt action 22 Mag already. It is set-up for varmit hunting. So a semi-auto would be great for plinky or even as a back-up.

No, the 10/22 has an alloy receiver and isn't long enough or strong enough.
If you want a semi-auto 22 MRF, the Remington 597s work pretty well. I have 1 that shoots MOA +/-, depending on the ammo, and cycles reliably without excessive maintenance demands.
Stay away from the old Kodiak 260s. Even if they are often inexpensive to buy, they aren't reliable.

Orion,
Did you convert it or did you get it that way? What upgrades (ie trigger job, scope, etc) did you do to it that improves the accuracy?

duff645.....you aren't listening. You cannot convert a 22 LR to a 22 magnum in a 10/22.

MY 10/22 Mag came from the factory so chambered, you can't make a 10/22 into a Mag as far as I know.

IIRC, after-amrket coversions of the 2210 to 22 WMR entail a lot of beefing up -- mainly of the bolt assembly. Ruger took theirs based on the 2210 off the market vaery soomna after introduction.
Thwe 77 .22WMR however use the regular 22 LR action w/o problems.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I guess I will look for a used 10/22 Magnum instead. I saw a few, but too pricey (probably safe queens).

10/22 Magnums were dogs on the market until they were discontinued, then the prices on them doubled overnight. I have a 10/22 Magnum that I converted to 17 HMR back in 2003/2004, but still have the original parts, box, and unopened bag of goodies in case I want to put it back into its original configuration and sell it.
The Remington 597 has been very reliable, reasonably accurate, and I'm into it for $265. The Kodiak 260 not so much so.
