I recently bought a Spott Hogg but switched out the micros for regular. The small ones were plenty bright in the middle of the day but didn't show up worth salt in the evenings. Wondering if that is what others have found?

Yes, I had the same experience. I can't see the .019 micro pins, I prefer the larger .029 pins for hunting. Low light is when I seem to get all my shot opportunities, and with my aging eyes I need all the light transmission I can get through the fiber. Plus, I don't take shot's over 35 or 40 yds with my wheel bows anyway so I don't need small diameter fiber.

Hawkeye- Spot Hogg is a great sight! I use them and Copper John exclusively on my hunting bows.

I have mine set up like this:

20: green - .029
30: yellow - .029
40: red - .029
50: green - .019
60: yellow - .019

All three of them, I did not like the micro pins.

I'm not sure that the color sequence on my SpotHogg is the same, but my pin sizes are.
I like the smaller pins at distance.

On my MBG I started out with a staggered 29, 19, 10 X3. What I had trouble with was the optical illusion of the 29 pin versus the 10 pin. I removed the 29 and now have the 19 and three 10's which works great for me. All of the pins are very bright as is the norm with the MBG sights.

Depends on what I'm shooting. For 3-D, I use .010 on seven pins to 80 yards. My hunting set-up is usually a four pin with .019 max, and I like my 30 and 40 yards pins to be .010 if I can get it. I run a pin light (legal in VA, not in my home state-Idaho) if I need extra light at dawn and dusk, but I find if I'm turning the light on, it's too dark to shoot and see any small deflectors in the shooting lane. My deer never seem to center themselves in the lane as planned...

The pin light would light them up fine in the evening, I just didn't want to have to depend on it. I can see where the micro pins would be nice for 3D, especially on the longer targets.

I'd never used 5 pins on a hunting bow before so I had my SpotHogg setup like that so I could have some visual cues about which pin I was using. For my 3 hunting pins, I set 'em up like a stoplight 20=Go 30=Caution 40=Stop so they'd be 2nd nature. The smaller pins are nice at long range (for targets) but I chose the smaller pins to also help me not get them mixed up with my first two while drawing on a deer....

Same here, it has to be a bad weather day or deep shadows before I use light, I don't depend on it. With the sometimes thick tree canopy cover in Virginia, I have been slowed down by a cloud over the sun, or a branch over the treestand that made me think the light was a help. I'm using an Axcel sight, the light window can be blocked by tight shots next to my tree trunk. My 40 yard pin is always red, and I run green/red alternating and avoid yellow if I can.

Now, if you only knew how many times I left the light on, or bumped it on in the bow case, you'd really know how much I don't depend on it. blush

I just bought an Apex Atomic with .019 pins, when it arrives I will let you know if I like them better versus my old .029.
