Does this exist? As we all know, one advantage of the Model 99 is that you can use any shape nose. But most of the .30/30 ammo I've seen has a blunt nose. Just curious.

Hi,

It exists if you handload--problem is in finding a pointed bullet that will expand properly at the velocities that the 30-30 is capable of. Most pointed bullets are designed for somewhat higher speeds than the 30-30 develops--that being said some of the softer bullets would likely work quite well as would the sigle-shot pistol hunting bullets.

The other limiting factor is overall length of the loaded round--it still has to feed through the action.

Factory ammo is loaded to the lowest common denominator--the winchester/marlin tube fed levers which are far more common than the 99's or bolt action 30-30's.

If I used a Model 94 Winchester (oppppppsss.. there's that "dirty word" again ) in .30/30... I'd load a "spitzer" (pointed) bullet in the chamber as the first round.

Of course, you DEFINITELY should NOT load anything but blunt-nosed bullets in the Model 94's tubular magazine.

I'd use the same bullet I use with my Model 99, a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip which is designed to expand down to as little as 1800 fps. Since a good many riflemen make the FIRST bullet "count", one would not be at as great a disadvantage using a .30/30 if he follows this "rule".

Surprise! Hornady has come out with POINTED bullets for most of the tube magazine rifle cartridges, like .30-30, .45-70. They are tipped with a rubber tip! Brilliant! If only I could get them to build a batch of .30 REMINGTON.

Wow! 250 fps faster! Now I can take those 400 yard shots with my 30-30!!

Not..

Course, now you could safely blame that missed buck on the fact that the bullet just HAD to have bounced off!

Laugh all you want. I just think it's real nice of Hornady to make something for those who aren't fortunate to own 99s. Bless their hearts.

Hmm... this actually gets the 30-30 closer to the 300 Savage ballistics.

Here's an idea... buy a 99 in 300 Savage! Pointed bullets in a 30-30.. just seems wrong in, oh, so many ways!
