This morning, I finially got a chance to go hunting, so I walked in about a half mile, climbed up to my perch about 20 feet up in a white oak, and was just getting ready to load up the muzzleloader, when all heck broke loose right under the tree. At least 5, maybe more (it was still dark) coyotes set in to howling, all around my tree. Talk about a sound that will make you drop your percussion cap and make your hair stand up! They hung around until it was almost light enough to see and then left. About 45 minutes later, they ( i guess it was the same bunch) ran a doe down the draw in front of me, and the dang 'yotes were yipping and kind of barking while they ran the deer. I took a shot at them, but they didn't even break off, just kept right on running the doe out of hearing.
I admit that I know nothing about coyotes, but is it normal for them to "bark" when they're chasing down prey? I always figured that they would be more of a silent predator...

Youngsters. Time to put in some time on the local 'yotes during and right after deer season. Gutpiles and roadkill will be drawing them like flies. Go get 'em.

Time for some song dog killing.

It is a very common sight in the panhandle to Tx, in the second phase of the rut, when the bucks are rutted down, to see 3 or 4 bucks chaseing a doe, and a pack of coyotes chasing the bucks. I have rattled in numerous coyotes. I was talking to a biologist the other day, and mentioned that I have seen this alot, and he told me, that we loose 30% of our mature buck population every year to coyotes, and predators after the rut. We really start hitting the coyotes hard out of the helicopter about this time every year.

A guy I work and fish with just got back from a bow hunt in Kansas. He told me the yotes out there will come in and eat cider flavored corn. He drilled one, told me their heck of a lot bigger then the ones we have around here. Thing was as big as a shepard, he guestimated over 50lbs. Seems the locals out that way aren't too woried about em. I'd love to go out there and ventilate a few if needed

Well, 1 down.... this morning, a pair came by at about 45 yards... .50 caliber PowerBelt over 100 grains of 3f 777 don't leave a lot of pelt, but is sure put that 'yote down in a hurry.

Too bad you didn't have a mini 14 so you could have taken care of both the dirty little ............sons of an unmarried woman.

In western OK, in good rabbit and quail years the coyotes actually keep a deer camp awake half the night with their yelping.

This Oct I was bow hunting in Mi. 1 hour before dark the yotes started going nuts ,sounded like they caught something, I had a spike coming in, 4 does coming from the other way, the deer just froze, danced around and took off, did not see another deer for a week. This spring calling turkeys with a box call two yotes all most ran me over, only one got away, they other went 48lbs made a nice photo.

Once I was hunting Tuttle Marsh over by Tawas. Same thing. Just before sunset they started to come alive, I was surrounded by at least 4 yotes. Don't know if I could dump many with a front stuffer

one more down. This time to the 444 Mauser, 180 gr. XTP running a touch over 3200fps. Left pieces of 'yote hanging about 15 feet up in the bushes and the rest of the carcass looked like roadkill that the buzzards had been picking over.

Custom built on a 48a action, 25" Montana rifleman barrel, hefty charge of H110 under the 180. Chrono's at 3225. You ain't the only one that looks funny when I tell folks about the velocities, but when it "out speeds" their 300 mags, they really scratch their heads and walk off muttering....

It has proved to be a very interesting rifle, both in building and in load development. Montana rifleman built the barrel, a #5a contour (med. varmint) 1:16 twist. A local 'smith installed and chambered it, and he and I spent many hours working on the feeding. Looking back, I probably should have went with a blown out 30-06 case, (Dr. Ken Howell's 444'06) instead of the rimmed case, but in the end, it worked out pretty well. The loads ( I have several that shoot VERY well in this rifle) are pretty much pulled directly from various loading manuals, and I mostly use reloader 7 for the bullet weights of 250 grains or over. The 180 grain XTP load that I took the coyote with was pulled from Loadswap.com on the Beartooth bullet site. Their data shows 3040fps for this load from an 18.5 " barrel, my F-1 reads 3215 ~ 3240 every time I test this load...must be that extra 6.5" of barrel on my Mauser. Be warned tho, this load is not for use in low light, the muzzle flash is awesome, visible even in bright daylight.

GaryL,
Thanks for info.
I'm a 444 fan from way back.
I never thought of building a 444
on a bolt action, and never considerd
using 180's in one. That's pretty eye
opening on those velocities, very cool,. Thanks again.

Thanks Bart. The 180 load was worked up for a varmint load. It is very tough on groundhogs and coyotes, and shoots pretty flat out to 300 yards.... and it shoots into less than an inch for 3 shots at a 100 yards. another plus is that it uses ALMOST the same zero as my Nosler partition 250 grain deer load (about an inch difference at 100 yards) so it's fairly easy to "hold off" when i have the chance to change loads when a varmint shot comes up...
