What would you recommend in the 0-30 degree range for a 6'3" big guy that is not overly confining and moderately priced? Heading for WY late Oct. for Muley and Elk.
Thanks

My wife bought me a Cabelas XPG down bag rated to 15 degrees. I've been in it down to low 20's and stayed comfortable. It isn't lightweight for backpacking, around 4 1/2 pounds. I believe it cost somewhere in the $125-$140 range.
Obviously not top of the line or a lightweight but serviceable.

edit: Oh, and it's HUGE. I'm 6'2", 200lbs and HATE a confining bag. I can get lost in this bag!

Take a look at the Mont-bell bags. I'm not a big guy (5'10" and 195lbs), but the regular (fits to 6') has plenty of stretch for me, more roomy feeling that other bags I've used/tried.

I would of recommended Montbell bags also but he said he was on a budget. They can be kinda spendy. Prolite gear had them on sale for awhile but I see they dont now.

yeah, I didn't realize how expensive they are now - picked mine up a couple of years ago on sale for about half what I see now . . .

I know they've changed/improved, but "ouch".

Just checked Montbell's website and they still have 2011 bags on sale! I think all they have changed for 2012 is the fabric they use. Looks like the 12's have a new type of water repellant fabric. Here is a 15 degree for $255. I would buy that up ASAP. http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=53&p_id=2321114

I would recommend looking for a used bag on ebay or some of the backpacking sights. You can save 30-40%. For instance, the Ultralight (UL) version of the Montbell bag Big W linked to is about a pound lighter and can often be found used for about $250-$275. So, for the same price you're losing a pound of packweight...but warmth, comfort, everything else remains the same.

I second Kevin, look into a quilt.

If you can sew, you can make your own.

If you want a brand new ultra-light, for backpacking, it's gonna cost you. Otherwise, you have plenty of time to watch for a deal on a really good one that's on sale, or even a surplus military system that is rather heavy.

REI is an excellent source.
