Last evening I watched a dozen or so turkeys go to roost on the property I hunt. This morning I was able to get to within 75 yards of the area without detection and, for once in my life, was in the right spot. There was a lot of gobbling and even the hens were very vocal while they were still in the trees. The first birds came off the roost at about legal shooting time and landed 20 yards from where I was sitting. The three bigger toms in the group came down last and landed right in among the hens. It took about five minutes for them to stop milling around. No mating was going on yet. One tom moved to the left away from the main group and slightly toward my spot. I threw little soft calls at him and took him at 15 yards. Nice Merriam, 9" beard. In good shape this far into the mating season. Still had a little fat on him. His wing tips were beat up a bit. About ten minutes after this unfolded the wind came up and it started to rain a bit. One of the better days this year.
