Other than fun, necessity or novelty. Why would anybody ever shoot anything bigger than a .257 at a whitetail deer? ..............A) Because I can?.....B) It is a choice?.....C) Don`t own a 257?......D) Don`t plan on buying a 257 just for deer?.......E) Why not use a 264, 270, 7mm, a 30 cal, an 8mm, a 338 or larger?......F) And finally, no where is it written,,,,"thou shalt not use larger than a 257 caliber bullet on deer?" That sums things up. By the same logic, why would anybody buy a Bentley when all they really need is a Mercedes or a BMW? Why would anybody buy a Mercedes or a BMW when a Chevy is all they need? Why buy a 460 Wby when all that`s needed is a 458 Win? On and on we could go on this one with just about any subject.

Sometimes I prefer to kill with penetration rather than velocity.

Would you consider a heirloom a novelty? If you only own one rifle, (an -06 for example) do you call that a necessity?
For the most part I must agree with your point. 25 cals are awesome on deer.

Velocity is king with deer. Besides, it ain't no trick to have velocity and penetration.

Hydrostatic shock gets boring after awhile. You can't learn tracking skills if all you ever use is a fast 25cal.

Because a 25-20 is a little light in the azz???? An old Colorado Game Warden told me that the 25-20 was the poachers gun of choice for elk and deer through the first half of the last century, with the .22 Hornet a close runner up. Now of course the 22 mag is a top contender. 25-20 is still a pretty good choice if you have time to hunt and pick your shot when the crowds of magnum blasters are not around spooking all the critters.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost....

because some wise men considered that a 260 would be a good versatile round...
and I bought into that wisdom..

For me it's piece of mind. With or without merit. I want something that completely covers me for said whitetail deer and still allows me to feel prepared if and when I ever get to make that trip elsewhere for something a little bigger! The perfect cartridge exists! I came to my conclusion by considering three things: 1. Ammo availability 2. Minimal Recoil (utilizing the optimal bullet weight and velocity) and 3. Reloading component cost and availability! Ponder those variables and the answer is CRYSTAL CLEAR!!
