Other than fun, necessity or novelty. Why would anybody ever shoot anything bigger than a .257 at a whitetail deer? because there's a good number of cool rifles out there fairly begging to be took huntin... my 25-06 is my go-to for about any purpose... but the other rifles are not lessened by the excellence of my .25... i picked up a Husky 7 mag off the classifieds last summer... it is incredibly user friendly, sweet shooting, and well balanced... in fact, i am considering a stock of it's dimensions and type for the 25-06... and i really love the look of Winchesters featherweight stocks, but i crave the feel of this Husky...

That blacktail would look bigger if you didn't have Paul holding it.

Other than fun, necessity or novelty. Why would anybody ever shoot anything bigger than a .257 at a whitetail deer? You answered your own question. Besides, texas whitetails only weigh 100 lbs or so anyway right ? Beat me to it. For Golden Retrievers with hawns, little rifles work fine. Our deer look like deer.

because some places grow whitetails bigger than SE Texas True, but even up here I have yet to run into a WT or MD that wouldn't go down handily and speedily to a .243 or .257 bullet. Some of them are pushing 300+ lbs on the hoof, too. Apparently the factory 100 grain 243's don't drop the handily and speedily. Back a decade or more ago I heard my Grandfather shoot. I started heading his way because I knew he didn't miss. Then I heard him shoot again. Now he had just switched to a .243 Savage model 99 after a lifetime of .30-06 use for recoil reasons. When I got to him he was on his way to get his buck. Walking to it he told me that his first shot was taken resting on a fence post at 150 yards. He said he knew his hold was good but the buck just stood there looking around and started walking away so he went for the shoulder a second time and then the buck went down. When we got over to it it was a nice fat five point with two bullet holes side by side in the shoulder. Gramps cussed that .243 right then and there and said he was going back to his .30-06. And then there was the time my BIL hit the spike buck four times with his 243 before it went down...............

I have used a .257 Roberts for quite a few Saskatchewan whitetails. Worked perfectly for the job. But I have often used something else for fun, necessity or novelty.
A very common necessity here is that I am often hunting moose or elk and the whitetail is a bonus animal. In that case a 160 - 175 gr. 7mm, 165-180 gr. .308 or 225-250 gr. .358" bullets have taken a bunch of deer for me too.

Other than fun, necessity or novelty. Why would anybody ever shoot anything bigger than a .257 at a whitetail deer? Because when I was 15 mom and dad gave me a .270Win for Christmas. Dad also shot a .270. Shooting the same caliber as dad meant that I could shoot pretty much all I wanted and only had to fill the cases back up when I was done. Had I gotten a different caliber I would've had to buy my own components.

That brings up a very good point. If the only bullets you can get are Core-Lokts, you definately need bigger guns.
