G23 stolen while flying...
This really pisses me off.

My G23 was stolen from my bag while flying to Tampa. I'm equally pissed at the TSA policies that enabled this theft. I followed all the right procedures by declaring it while checking in, signing the paperwork, and showing the TSA rep it was unloaded and in a locked hard case. As usual, I was told to leave the bags themselves unlocked for inspection purposes. I hate having remote inspections that require passenger bags to remain unlocked. This fully enables this kind of theft. Needless to say, the US Air customer service reps were pretty freaked out when I reported it

The gun was missing from the bag when I got to Tampa. So of course, I file a report with the airline, airport police, and will be calling the airport I left from in the moring to file a report with them. So far the airline rep said that if it goes unrecovered, US Air will compensate. We'll see. I hope they find it as I hate the idea of my gun being used in some Gangbanger bull$h*t shootout....

I was called by the airline a little while ago and was told that the security people are reviewing the tapes at the departure airport. I'm pretty certain that even if they find the thief, the gun is gone.

Always, always, always be gone for at least a week. When repacking, put the dirty underwear on the top so the TSA folks won't want to go through your stuff.

You have the RIGHT to be present when your bag is inspected. ASK for a supervisor if you are not accomodated. Once the bag has been inspected it is tagged and can be locked with no fear of the lock being cut off.

While flying out of Billings recently I had an unusual experience. TSA dude found a bunch of shotshells in a game coat in the very bottom of my pack. While chiding me for not following the rules he pulled out an empty shotshell box and transferred the ammo to it and then packed it inmy bag!

He brings in the boxes just so people like me do not lose their shells. He happens to be a former Coastie and seems to understand performing a service.

Losing a gun would suck. M and I lost a Barney moose freighter bag and contents on a return from Kodiak. Contents included a Zeiss 10x42 ClassiC. That was many years prior to TSA. Homeowners' insurance covered the loss.

Good info. I honestly did not know that. First time we ran into the 'inspection' crap was coming back from a cruise. They inspected EVERYTHING, although at least this time I knew it was going to happen beforehand, so everything of any real value that we had purchased in the Caribbean we took with us onboard as carryon.

Obviously you cannot do that with a handgun. Man I hope you get that back..

Nope, but I have a reliable automobile and if I can't get there from here that way, I don't need to get there. I do have a friend with a corporate plane, but that can bite you in the azz also!

If it embarrasses you to use skivvies with real skidmarks, you can buy skivvies with fake skidmarks specifically for the application. Seriously. Wish I could give you a URL, but I don't have time to look for one.

TLEE, if you put all the facts into a computer for statistical analysis I'll guarantee you're safer flying to a destination, without your weapon, than driving to your destination with your weapon... food for thought.

If I can't carry on my 2 1/2 inch pocket knife there is no use or reason for going. My thought is on 9-11-01 I didn't do anything illegal or wrong that would cause anyone to scrutinize my every move. Take me and my pocket knife or do without my patronage. It sounds simple, but those are my standards. Every good farm boy carries a pocket knife. It's a GOD given right as far as I'm concerned. Me and my pocket knife or nothing. Don't tread on me. kwg

Just flew home today on leave. Get thru TSA and digging round in my bag - come up with a razor. Eagle eyes.

I was flying out of San Angelo once - had my sea-bag all done up nice ect. The guy at the counter informs me that they do "random" searches of ALL military baggage and no one elses. The ONLY bags they check are military. Sure enuff - I get home and my whites are all FUBAR, marks on them where they dropped them on the deck and my ribbon rack was bent. They were also "nice" enuff to place my work boots on TOP of my dress uniforms when they "re-packed" the bag.

Jokers --- the lot.

A friend of ours flew down to Texas before 9/11. She had a pocket knife which she showed at the security checkin and was told that the size made it permissible to carry on the plane. She took their word for it, and took it on board with her. At the other end, authorities were waiting for her and arrested her for carrying the knife onto the plane. She spent at least one night in jail in Austin. She was very angry.

Her mistake was not getting the 'OK' in writing.... It's called a 'CYA memo'....

I go back to my original statement about not doing anything wrong on 9/11/01. I was the School Resource Officer in a building with 1300 students and staff. I would like to think that with my presence in the building and all of the uncertainty of the days events I helped provide a calming effect for the the students and the staff. And, that I and my commrads on the PD and on the Fire and Rescue were going to do all we could to keep them all as safe as we possibly could.

It was a day when we could truly say: "we are the government and we are here to help". My reward is not being trusted enough to be able to carry my 2 1/2 inch pocket knife on an airplane or even into a government building.

I'm am born and raised in the USA with no ties to any foreign government, a 20 year vetern of the Army and the National Guard with a secret security clearance and I can't be trusted to carry a pocket knife without big brother watching over me and scrutenizing my every move. This is one sick country. kwg

Look people, long before 9/11 we had hijacking... remember the spate of them in the late 60's and early 70's? Airliner's are primary targets for several reason's:

They are high visibility targets (media circus).

The effect of bringing a plane down plays into most people's conscious or unconscious fear of flying.

Airlines are a primary cog in our national economic machine.

The negative economic effect of targeting an airliner FAR exceeds the actual event.

It truly is the "most bang for the buck" in terms of a terror target.

Seriuosly, what a bunch of whiner's... all because you can't carry a pocket knife! Get real, the world's a dangerous place and we don't live in freakin' Mayberry. The rules are "fit's all" but this is a country of 265 million people, not all as trustworthy as those on this thread...
