Use a Howa or Vanguard action for a Mashburn build? I know I won't be getting the absolute lightest build, but 7mm RM/.300 WM Howas/Vanguards are less than half the cost of a Model 70.
Except for maybe the metric threads thing... is that just a case of finding a 'smith that'll work on them?

Just guessing, but you'll be fine. The HOWA/Vanguard is a feeding machine.
Find a smith to handle metric threads.

Thanks, Scott. Any idea what the mag length is on a long action? One of mine is a .223, the other a WSM, so I have no clue.

3.6 box and mag rails/bolt face? KDK you are good to go! If it feeds/functions with a 300 Weatherby/Win Mag, it should work with a Mashburn.Box length being the only factor affecting OAL.
Like Scott says, can't imagine someone could not handle the thread issue for you.

Thanks, fellas. Now that I've made up my mind, M70 donors are going to start raining on me.

I don't know what weight your trying end up with but this S&W 1500 (Howa)I had put together in the mid 80's goes just 7 1/4lbs as seen in the pic. It's got an early Brown Precision stock (Sako) and a blind mag.

Just a question- Have you looked at the older Winchester push feeds as donors? I picked one up this spring for $250 in a pawn shop, and it hadn't been used enough to wear the blueing in the receiver. They have great triggers and are a smooth action. I made the mistake of shooting mine before I rebarreled it, and now its going to stay an 06.

+1 on the PF M70's. My son has an XTR Sporter in .25-06 that was the most accurate out of box rifle of the MANY diff brands and chamberings that the guy I bought it off of had.

+2 on the push feed Model 70s. The ones I've owned always fed smooth and all but one, a 7x57 that wouldn't shoot 140s, were very accurate.

I'm "this close" to getting my CRF M70 Mashburn. And I happen to have a 257 Vanguard stainless. I am trying to decide whether to sell it as with the 7MSM in the safe I will never use it...or do I turn it into a second/backup 7MSM that also will never get used? Tough decision. But the action will work great.
Anybody who seriously concerns themselves with the adequacy of a Big 7mm for anything we hunt here short of brown bear, is a dufus. They are mostly making shidt up. Crunch! Nite-nite!

The PF M70s at home are all seemingly .270s...

A friend has one in his pawnshop the old Black shadow model chambered in 7mm rem mag. I think he has it tagged at 290 ish.
If that sounds like something you can use, let me know and I'll get you the number to his shop.
