You think a 125grain win power point bullet will kill a prairie poodle in my .284? Seriously though....was thinking about loading some of these for coyotes since I have a box, you think it would make too big a hole to patch? Any suggestions? anyone use their .284 for varminting? I have a long range scope on it so I would want to load for up to 500 yards. Thanx, Vern.

Well, sometimes ya try what ya got, if it don't work, thars an excuse to get another <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Just want to use up the 125s I guess? Maybe if there was some whitetails around, don't want to try them on mulies, although my regular bullet is only 20 gr heavier. Vern.

I've used the 7mm 120gr VMax a bunch out of my 7-08's, 7 Mag's, 7WSM and 7 STW's.
It'll hammer stuff flat, and sometimes stays inside a coyote.
I'd not be afraid of whacking a yote or two with any of the bulk bullets. It's be great practice for big game season.

Great, can't wait to load some and start calling. Dunno what to do with the pelts though, the local tannery shut down years ago.

I used some old 125 grain PP factory ammo in my 284 for antelope last year. It left the largest exit hole I have ever seen. I could have put my fist in the exit hole. From that experience, I would not use the 125 PP in anything I was trying to minimize the damage of.

I hear you dronoofrio... hunted with a 284 Savage 99 I loved, but when I found an exit wound from a powerpoint that fit BOTH of my fists in it I switched to a lighter caliber for whitetails. Granted that 'yotes don't have the bone structure that deer do, I'd give it a try. Take a backup gun along though in case your first shot just leaves a flurry of fur behind... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.

Hadn't thought about prarie goats, maybe I'll draw a tag one of these years, wish there were more around here, I'll have to change my unit designation before I draw, and probably a couple more years worth of pref. points, dronofio, where do you hunt them? How many pref. points to draw? Vern.

Bullets that heavy tend to ricochet easily. As a result they make a relatively poor choice for prairie dogs.

I hunted in Northern Colorado, Unit 87. It took 8 points to draw a tag.

Having seen those orig.WW 125gr 284s sell high at auctions more than once, I'd do that and use the proceeds to buy 2-3x as many other varmit bullets, fwiw, Lyle
