Yes, why? Why go from a kind-of obsolete round to a semi-obsolete round that will only increase effective range on varmints maybe an extra 40-50 yards? Will the magazine even work with the longer cartridges? Rifle looniness infects me too, but I am scratching my head over this one!

You will need a new magazine and I doubt one exists for the 222 mag.

Even though the Savage 340 series rifles use a barrel nut, making setting the headspace easier, I'd think that the cost would run between $100 and $150. And, when you're done, you'd still have a 1-lug action with a split rear receiver ring that requires a side-mounted scope base.
If you're looking for more performance than your 222 provides, I think that it would be more cost effective to sell the 340 and buy a Stevens 200 in either 223 or 22-250. That said, I'm not and never have been a big fan of the Savage 340 series..

Only reason to do this is if the chamber throat is REALLY badly eroded for some reason. And as noted above, it causes other problems. If the gun is shooting well, as most 340 .222s do, I'd leave it be. Just my opinion, of course.
The .222 Magnum is an excellent cartridge. However, it was left behind by the .223, and cases probably won't be available much longer. The .222 will be with us for the foreseeable future; MANY were made and it is legal all over the world, even in the many places where the .223 is not.

There's a 340 in 223 for sale on www.gunsinternational.comcheaper to buy that gun than do a rechamber.

Thanks for all the answeers. It was really a moment of insanity which comes over me when I get a new rifle.. I already have a good load worked up from when I had a 340 before.

The 222 is a sweet little round as it is. The 340 it a reliable old rifle but has zero potential, no after market parts, scope mounting system, single locking lug and single action bolt realy limit what you can do with them.
I sold my 840 a couple of years ago to fund another Stevens 200/Savage 10-11 project. They are the tinkers dream. I have them in 223, 22-204, 6mm-204, 25-204, 250 Sav., 22-250 and 243Win with a short HB 222 and a 358 Win barrel in the near future. With a number of after market trigger, stocks and barrels plus the abillity to change bolt head size and Mags at home.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.
