Ran across one in fairly good shape . Ser. # 90,xxx . No extra holes drilled in it , original magazine , good bore , and solid wood. Very similar to the pics in a thread hear from a year ago april , so I can't search back to it when I'm logged in. Two questions : The rear sight does not have anything written on it like Uticy NY , but same shape as the pics I've seen with the stamps. Could this be original or a replacement ??? Also the metal butt-plate has just the circle around the SVG letters , which is different from the pics in the thread. Would that be timely for the 90xxx range ? Thread I refer to is this one : http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/5174437/1

They eventually stopped stamping the sights and they were just plain. Looks original to me.
Looks to be in great condition if it's all original.

Nice gun to have. I have never been able to decide if I liked the "Sporters" or the later "Speedlock" Model 23s better. Wish Savage had made the speedlock but with a cocking piece like the Sporter, and with the (almost) flush magazine of the 23. Did they ever make any like that?

Very nice! Most you find are well used.
The "SVG" plate was added around 1928 so the rifle would be in the 1928-1932 production range.

Thanks all for the help !!!
I didn't know there was a # stamped into the backside of the but-plate and also in the wood under it. These 2 numbers match but they are higher than the serial # by a little over 1,600 . When it left the factory would all 3 numbers have matched ?

Nice gun, nice pics. Sometimes we do need to see them even if we all know what they look like!

There is little fitting needed in this style of stock so it is very common to find that the stock/plate number is not the same as the serial.

Thanks , knowing little about Savages ( why I came here ) I guessed that after a barrel/receiver were finished milling it got numbered and sent down the line for the next step. After final prep work and then bluing they went to the furniture shop. Easy to understand that 1- 2% of the stocks were not up to par so grab the next one and make a rifle you would want to own yourself. Too sad that craftsmanship and pride in building a quality product is so rare now.
