I need help on pricing a scope that I recently acquired on a gun deal. The scope is a Nikon Monarch 4x16x42 SF, mil dot with Nikon flip up scope caps. The owner says he bought it around a year ago. It looks like it is in great shape. I have not pulled the rings off to see if it has any marks. No marks on the glass or tube.

I like Nikon and I love the power settings but I don't think I will like the Mil dot. I don't think I will ever hunt game far enough to where I will need that reticle and my math is kind of fuzzy sometimes too. Chances are, I would blow the shot with the extra dots.

What is a fair price for this scope. My goal is to get a Zeiss conquest 4.5x14x44 with either the zplex or plain reticle. I know I would have to put up extra money but I want to see if I would be able to raise enough $$$ for to put towards a zeiss. Or just keep it and hunt.

Thanks in advance.

275-300 shipped, and thats top dollar. nikons dont seem to bring the premium leupys or zeiss or the other high dollar good glass do, although i think they are on the same level

they run 460.00 new at SWFA, i don't see why you couldn't get close to 300.00- 350.00 if in great shape.

i wouldn't let it go for a dime less than 300.00 myself if in good shape.

If you hunt on normal light conditions I would just keep it. I have never had Nikon mil dot so I don't know what they look like exactly but unless you hunt big game at very low light I don't see much disadvantage to it (just don't use anything but the crosshair part of it).

Even with low light big game hunting I don't see a regular plex offering that much advantage. You would have to move into first focal plane scope with #4, #8 or #1 type reticles which the Conquest doesn't offer.

Just my $0.02. Other have already determined the going rate which I too believe to be around $300, give or take.

I have decided at this point and time in my life, I will keep the scope. I would have to come up with alot of money to get the Zeiss. I am sure I will get use to the Mil Dot reticle.

Different question

I will put this on a Tikka T3 - 300 wsm and I am thinking about going with the DNZ grim reaper rings. Should I go with the low or med rings? Will a 42mm objective fit with the small rings?

personal preference however low rings do not fit me well, i have to smush my cheek into the comb of the stock, i get much better cheek weld with medium rings. jmo lenny
