Sounds like bad sear/hammer engagement. Did you have a trigger job done recently? If not, you could have chipped off the leading edge of your hammer hook or sear.
You don't per chance thumb the hammer down a lot, do you? This can s Lead to a rounded/damaged sear/hammer surface.

Check the transfer bar in the slide and make sure it moves freely in its slot, no crud or binding. Also try the disconnector test, Gun Empty, lock the slide back, pull the trigger and hold it and drop the slide, hammer should not fall. If it does, might be a sear/hammer/ sear spring issue.
With the slide removed, you can clean and inspect the sear edge by holding the hammer off engagement.

I sold mine and have kicked myself since. :-)

I have a MKIII and when I rake the slide and release it the hammer falls, whats up ? The most common culprit is the sear spring, which is the flat spring visible under the grips and holds the sear in engagement with the hammer. A replacement or re-bend might cure the problem. If the sear spring isn't holding the sear with enough force the vibration of the slide returning to battery can bounce the sear which releases the hammer.
Forgive me my nonsense, as I also forgive the nonsense of those that think they talk sense. Robert Frost
