Speaking of old vs new, who of you here still use the 6 MM Remington and the 222 Remington as opposed to the newer 22 and 24 calibers?

Me, I like the Oldies!

Got 2 6mm Rem.'s a PF Win. 70 Featherwight that my daughter has confiscated and a Ruger No.1B. Both are good shooters if I do my part.

I have a Rem 722 in 222 Rem that gets a lot of use on groundhogs.

Have had four 6mm Remingtons and two .222's. Finally decided the .243 and .223 were just as good, and a lot easier to deal with, especially when buying brass.

That said, I do deal with several older rounds due to "romance," especially the .416 Rigby, but don't shoot nearly as many rounds out of my .416 as my .223's and .243's.

If you want to get practical and still go semi-old, the .221 Fireball will do the same things with today's powders and bullets as the .222 did 50 years ago--and you can watch the bullets land through the scope, even in a lightweight rifle.

Oh the 222 is the sweetest most accurate cartridge I have shot or loaded for! I used to have an old Sportco bolt action in that calibre and you couldnt miss. My brother has it now, and I am trying to work out how to get it back!

have a sweet 6mm Remington in a Ruger Mark II... bought it at the local gun shop from the consignment rack a few years ago... rifle looked brand new (early 90s production IIRC) and the fella was asking $450 for it. I asked the salesman to call him and offer $400, knowing he would not take it, and got a call 30 minutes later saying come and git it the rifle was mine... Come to find out, the rifle had been won at a raffle, and so the owner made pure profit. LOL. I am not one to back out on an offer I make, so I went and plonked down the $400. i like the rifle a lot, but have not yet figured out a sweet heart load for it.

Brookie - I have a 700, 243 BUT I like my M 6 -6mm Rem better.

There is nothing wrong w/the 243. The 6mm is longer and what many don't realize is SLIMMER. There is only 1 gr working diff. between the two rounds.

Also if you compare the two -- the 6mm looks like a mini 270 W.

I got my M 6 after the M 6s were discontinued and I have NOT SEEN another one in real life.

The 6mm M 6 is NOT for sale.

What do you want the load to do? Varmint? Deer? Combo?

If I/we knew what you'd like to load for, we might be able to help.

Dogger, how does your Ruger 6mm shoot? I found one NIB tucked away at the bottom of a stack of new rifles in an old gunshop a couple years ago and it will not leave my mind.

I have a 6mm that was my grandfathers... a 788 Remington that may be my most accurate rifle. That being said, I picked up a used .243 in a 700 that I imagine I will use more... just dropped it into a Mickey, so it's lighter and I don't have to worry about beating the crap out of a family heirloom.

I also just put an offer on an early 700 ADL 6mm at a gunshop yesterday, but they said it wouldn't be released until the 29th, so who knows if I'll go back for it. It was kinda beat up, and they were pretty proud of it.

I'm always on the lookout for a .222. I would love to find a wood stocked 700 Varmint... the one that looked like a BDL.

Big Redhead, it shoots anything I put through it into about 1" give or take 1/8", if I do my part. I have not found the 1/2" load yet... I like it a lot. The walnut stock has nice straight lines, and it is my favorite walking around rifle, even though it is a tad heavy. I have an inexpensive Leupie 2-7x32 on it and it weighs about 8& 1/4 lb with ammo.

Right now I have a Remington 722, Model 7 and a Sako Vixon L461 heavy barrel in 222. In 6 MM I have a Remington 700 VLS and a Ruger #1 B Liberty Model (1976).

The 722 was my Dads rifle, first centerfire I ever shot. Dad's gone now but I feel like he's with me when I take the 722 out huntiing groundhogs. That rifle still shoots great. My wife bought the Model 7 for me for my birthday years ago. Needless to say those rifles will be with me till I pass them on to my boys.

Believe it or not, the 2 6 MM's shoot the same load great. IMR 4064 powder, CCI BR2 primers and the Sierra 85 gr BTHP. They're my heavy varmint guns.

I've never had any problems finding brass for the 222 or 6 MM. I have had trouble finding 221 Fireball brass though.

The 222 brings back great memories of hunting with my Dad and our friends, all of which are gone now. I don't think I'll ever be without one.

I have two 722's in .222, one of which is a 722"B" and another which should have been graded a "B" with the fancy grain in its stock. They both shoot very well for having been made in '53 and '54. I've never had a 6MM or .244 but do have two .243's

My first gun - and still my go-to for whitetails - is my LH 788 in 6mm. It's finally getting a new stock after 40 years of moving brush out of the way. Dad's 722 in 222 has my 5 brothers awaiting its passing down, since I have my own. All at least 40 years old and shoot as well or better than a lot of new stuff.

My daughter got a 243 when she turned 12 and I have a 223 that shoots pretty well, but I still like the older stuff.

It's not a 6mm or 222 but if you like oldies I thought you might enjoy seeing what I stumbled across the other day. It's a near mint first year production Rem 700 Varmiter 243 with a Weaver V9

why are we calling the 6mm Remington "old" but not the .243 Win when they were both released in 1955?

Not a gun writer, yet.. grin grin

I understand your ? but TECHNICALLY the 6mm was introduced the 244 Rem. The moniker was changed latter.

So the 243 is even older.
