I also have one. Bought it used in the 60's. One word of caution-keep it clean. I have had problems with cycling after shooting a bunch of shorts.

My father had a 550 when I was a kid. He used it to teach me gun safety and marksmanship.

They are certainly accurate, but as noted, keep them clean, they get fussy when there's some dirt involved.
I shot my cousin's 550-1 when growing up, and shot it a LOT better than he did d:^) , it was a sweet rifle. He's still got it, too.

Mine isn't in that nice of condition but it's a shooter and has never failed to fire.

Nice find. I hope she shoots to your expectations.

I have been shopping the .22 market lately too, and I wish the manufacturers still produced the matte reddish finish that was common for so many years. Of course, even plain walnut is expensive these days, so it is no longer the norm. Still, those older guns weren't made to be custom or collectors pieces, just working guns for the average sportsman. Even in the 1800s companies like Winchester stained the stocks and dunked them in a barrel of oil or varnish. Now we go to considerable trouble and expense to duplicate the look of what were at the time very ordinary guns.

Older isn't always better. I recently bought a .22 made in 1946, that turned out to be a lemon, and not because it had been used hard. Quality has not always been linear, and even the iconic brands and models have had their ups and downs through the years.
