My girl friend lives close to Crestview, and I'd like to get her some long range rifle training.

Any info good or bad on these guys?

Very very competent, intelligent and capable guys. I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

LR training? Is she already competent at "mid-range"? She'll likely learn more from Randy Cain at his yearly Practical Rifle course than anywhere else. He has a place above Tampa FL, but he teaches all over. He's been the rangemaster for a few of Cooper's Gunsite 270 courses.

I was honor grad from my SOTIC class in '87. I still teach DOD units how to shoot today. Randy Cain is the finest firearms trainer I've ever met.

Where would you recommend for a intro level class for bolt action rifles?

Looks like his next Practical Rifle Class in Fl is in NOV. she needs to show up with a light, handy, bolt-action that won't beat her up. Nothing heavier than 308. I used a Steyr Scout with a Leupold scout scope. Randy favors a 1-4x scope over a forward mounted optic. She'll need a "youth" length stock, probably about a 12.5in LOP and the stock really, really needs a third sling swivel ahead of the magazine and one of Andy Langlois' excellent Ching Slings.

She's 6 foot. Still think she'll need youth stock? If so, why?

Jeff Cooper was over 6ft. He used a Steyr Scout with all of the spacers removed, which is about a 12.75in LOP. When you transition from Camp Perry to the real world, one quickly realizes that things sometimes happen rather quickly and you need to make it happen NOW. Having a stock a half-inch too long will set you up for injury on snap shots due to the stock not making in all the way into the pocket as it should. This happens a lot faster with an 870 and slugs, but a 308 all afternoon will get you hurt if it doesn't fit.

I'm currently shooting a Rem 700 in 7SAUM in a B&C I picked up from another fire member that is 12-3/8ths. I've finally decided that is TOO short for me. I'll add spacers or resell it. Having said that I've shot it a bunch in the prone with a 4.5-14 Leupy and I've been scoped once, so, unless you have a neck like a giraffe, you don't need 14in LOP.

12 3/4's works for me, a really BIG guy might do okay with a 13.5, but most are better off with a shorter stock.

She'll probably be shooting a 308 or a 243. Will Randy allow a bolt 223 with a fast twist, or does he require bigger?

I don't think Randy would have any issue with a 223, if she has a 308, take that as well. I want to do that course again with a 30/30 trapper. Shots will be mostly inside 50yd, with a fair number of hours at 200yd.

That course sounds really cool. Those 308 scout type rigs always intrigued me.

I have competed against Shannon Kay a few times in tactical matches. He is a good guy knows his stuff as well. Pretty laid back. I'm sure his classes would be of benefit for people starting out.

No, I guess you missed the part about LR rifle training being silly as hell if'n you ain't got the basics nailed down first. If you want to be high-speed, master the basics.

When you can hold two MOA from prone and fairly close to that from sitting, you are ready to start learning to dope wind and shoot long.
