I live in Virginia and have never bear hunted until now, meaning with that story, I felt I was right with you. GREAT report, AWESOME bear and EXCELLENT pics to boot. Congratulations to you and your hunting partner and I bet your Brother wish he had gone.

Right on! Anyhow I've never seen one that size in Texas!

They are ALL great, but I think you just accomplished the Zenith in North American big game hunting. Congratulations! Zounds What a Bear!

Wow! Great bear!

They are, IMHO, the greatest game animal we have in this hemisphere. There is nothing that can top getting up-close and personal with an animal that can kill you in seconds. Congratulations on such a great trophy!

Awesome bear, AKBuilt!

That guy is a friggin brute.

I think your story just convinced me to return to Kodiak to improve on my 9'1" bear!

Sweet skull and excellent hide, doesn't get any better than that and nice work telling the tale.

Incredible bear!!!

I should have been hunting from the south Frazer cabin at the same time. Had a Dog Salmon Creek spring tag. Couldn't pull it off - mostly that I need a firm 2+ week commitment from others. Unfortunately, I don't have any hard-core, long-time hunting pards that I can count on. Good thing you have such huntin' buddies.

What do you think the hide ended up weighing?

Another question, was there enuff open water to land on the lake?

Reading your hunt and seeing the pictures takes me back to my hunt on Kodiak last spring. Your bear is a brute. Hope your next tag doesnt take 19 years. Our maybe you are done with kodiak bears? I thought I was, but have been thinking about trying to get back and do it again. Thanks, Dean

Another question, was there enuff open water to land on the lake? that there was just enough open water to slide in and drop the two of us off with all our gear for a ten day hunt.

The south cabin was accessable on skis only...but from what I was told by the pilots, the ice was marginal at best for that up to about the 20th of April. Within days of being at the North cabin the ice was breakin up good and turning to mush. Plus, with the snow conditions at that end (from what I could see from my Binos) it was still socked in down to the lake shore with snow. Seems like a guy would have been hard pressed to find open country. At the North end...we had plenty of open tundra down low...but at 1000' it got thick. 11 Bears were spotted total....all but three were above the 1500' mark. Bummer you missed out...If i were to put in for that area again...and i doubt I will....Id try for the Karluk area...only because the hunt area is larger. Ultimately, Id put in for the farthest southwest unit. Bigger bears Ive been told and lower hills to climb. Good luck in the future!!!
