MD,
What is a reasonable expected velocity from a 24" barrel for the 175 grain NPT for the 7X57? Will H4831 work?

I'm not MD but I shoot the 7x57. At least I do something right.  Seriously I've been playing with the Hornady 175 gr. RN in mine more to see how the original loads worked. In my Ruger #1 A and Winchester M70 Featherweight, velocity was spot on with a duplication load of W760. (44.0 gr./W760 for 2400 FPS at 44,500 C.U.P. according to the little booklet published by Winchester.) Actually, the Ruger and M70 only did 2300 FPS. My custom Mauser on the other hand did do that 2400 FPS. It has always given higher velocity than the other two rifles and I have been following that 7x57 for elk thread very closely. I have been able to push the 140 gr. Ballistic Tip to 2800 FPS in the M70 but the load is too hot in that tight chambered Mauser. I haven't had time to persue it farther but I believe that using W760, Winchester brass and WLR primer, I should be able to reach at least 2500 FPS and maybe even a bit higher without going overboard. he Nosler manual shows 2498 FPS from 47.0 gr. of IMR4831 but no data for H4831. The highest velocites shown are 2539 FPS from 47.5 gr. of RL22 and 2574 FPS from 50.5 gr. of Viht N165. They only show 2460 FPS from 44.0 gr. of H414 which is the same as W760 but they arfe restrictred to keeping close to SAAMI specs for the most part. I too will be very interested to se what JB has to say on this subject as I really would like to use my 7x57 on my next elk hunt. Paul B.

Waiting for MD answer, I tell my experience with my two 7x57 Mausers since 1972, and from 1980 hunting big Red Deer (almost elk-size)in northern Patagonia, at the foothills of the Andest, and various 173/175 grs bullets. I started using IMR 4831 back in 1980. And the fabulous RWS H-Mantle 173 grs. I duplicated the factory RWS load without any problem: 2500 and some fps. That velocity, as usual with RWS ammo, is the one announced by that brand.
Recently, for the past 10 years or so, I use R22 for 160 to 175 grs bullets in the 7x57. And in my M98 (1935) Mauser with a military new barrel of 60 cm (little less than 24") I can reach 2650 fps with 173 grs H-Mantle (my last ones...),175 Hornady Spire Points and Nosler Partition bullets. Without any sign of too much pressure and 10 loadings of the same Winchester cases.

I got 2550 fps with 49.0 gr. of Ramshot Hunter under a 175 Horn. RN in a Ruger #1. No pressure signs but my gut tells me that I'm near max. Accuracy was quite good.

Paul, Funny you mention this because I have the same experience. All my Ruger 7x57s can handle heavier charges than my FN Mauser. My #1 maxes out at 45gr of H4350 with 175gr Hornadys. I have not gone past 45gr in my M77 (tang safety) but it handles that with aplomb. My M77MkII maxes out at 44gr, but my FN maxes out at just 41gr. These maxes are all determined by traditional pressure signs (loading manual max loads, CHE, primer pocket stretch, bolt lift, extraction ease, and accuracy). All of these rifles are accurate, which pleases me to no end, but the FN is the most accurate. It will put the first two shots within an inch of each other at 200 yards every time. The Ruger MkII is still top dog though because it has the best trigger and feeds slicker than snot. I assume the FN will break-in to be as slick but it has not been fired much, possibly not at all when I first got it judging by the finish on the bolt body and face and complete lack of any type of fouling or metal shavings, even though it appears to have been made in 1955.
