Ambient light is often best.
Most of my article photos was shot under my back deck patio cover. The fibre-glass was fabulous with light and created NO shadow at all
It is amazing what a fella can do with just a bit of inventive thought and experimention.
Gorgeous photograph, my friend ... and WHAT a beautiful rifle.
Blessings,
Steve

About the time I start yawning over the ubiquitous-ness of Ruger No.1's, along comes an example like that, that gets my juices flowing again! Nice job, nice rifle.
Hint: meter for light on the rifle itself, not that background. Because the background is so much bigger than the subject, that's what the light meter will go by. Since that particular background is close to #5 medium gray it will shift everything else in the pic darker than it should be. (Picture the scene in black-and-white, with all of the tones represented on a scale of 1-10 with 1 pure white and 10 pure black. This background would show up at around the mid-point on that scale.) In this instance, opening the aperture one f-stop more than what the camera wants to do automatically will allow for more detail on the gun without washing out the background while still capturing that nice warm lighting effect you achieved.
(Sorry! There was a time I was into photography almost as much as I was into guns-which is saying a lot!)

The double extension rings rig also would work well for me. Whqat scope is that?

The scope is a Loopy VX-3 3.5-10x40 - it is the gloss blue version of what dogzapper put on his .257. It has a B&C reticle. I actually bought the scope for a .270 #1B, but it should work fine on the .30-40, especially with warmish loads. The front ring actually need not be offset, but I used one just to match the rear. I should clarify - there is actually an overhead tungsten lamp in the room. I tried various color compensation modes, and finally settled on this one, without spending a lot of time on it. It is Matrix metered, with no flash - one second at F8, IIRC. If I was to spend more time on the photo, first I'd get rid of the cat hair, then work on reflections and color corrections. Maybe try to light it with a bounce flash or softbox. For a low end lens, that 18-55 is very sharp One of the reasons I like Nikon is they use a color matrix meter - meaning the camera actually knows what color it's seeing, and exposes accordingly.
