This thread is perfect. I tend to come down on the side of the '06 over the .270 but the reality is that most of our moderate hunting cartridges are just splitting hairs. I've been thinking about a .25-06 for a while, but really it is just too similar to the .270. The same goes for the .260/7-08/.308; once you really look at them it is ridiculous how we elevate one cartridge over others...

A .270 was my 1st deer rifle when I was 16. Have killed quite a few deer with it. I consider the round to have near bout ideal ballistics for a whitetail cartridge.
That being said, i've been a lot more interested in my .243 and .250 sav pop-guns for the past few years. I just consider them a lot more fun to shoot at the range, and they kill the does I typically shoot just fine.
The .270 in a Sendero is a pretty amazing beanfield gun. Repeatable accuracy, great velocity and low muzzle blast from a 26" barrel, low recoil due to the gun's weight, etc. only problem is getting that boat anchor out to the stand in the 1st place.

We've got one of those .270win Sendero rifles too. The boat anchor comment isn't far off base, but it is pretty easy to shoot. My brother hunts it and I load him 140gr Ballistic Tips at 2,900 or so. Works great so far.....

The boat anchor comment isn't far off base, but it is pretty easy to shoot. That about sums it up ... real nice rifle to shoot, but kind of an ordeal to carry anywhere. Mine has the old rem 700 trigger tuned to the "glass rod" feel at about 3.5 lbs. the 1st .270 I got was a boat-paddle ruger like the one a few pages earlier. It comes back in a much more snappy fashion, but its a lot easier to carry. Groups are about 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" for 3 shots at 100, but it is at least very consistent.

1 millimeter = 0.0393700787 inches
So a true 7mm would be a caliber .275590551
So there you have it -- the .270 is overkill, no wonder it is so effective!

You have to give the .270Win. a lot of credit. Some 87 years later we are still extolling its virtues. A great cartridge without any military history devotion to keep its interest level up. Something that flat out works, is easy to shoot, is available in all action designs and not tempermental at the reloading bench. What's not to like?

.... Bob does make sense quite often. Jpro: Thanks, but don't tell my wife and kids that... I love the 270 not because I think it's better than anything else.....but because it is "lucky" for me....then there is that security factor and easy going nature of the cartridge that bigwhoop alludes to...getting a 270 to perform is not rocket science, does not take a lot of figuring or mental gymnastics. It is pretty simple. I shot my new Brux barreled 270 for the first time the other day....Blue Box Federals went 3/4" the first group.I repeated, same result;cleaned, and fouled with another shot. I scrounged around the truck until I found three cartridges with 61-H4831-130 Nosler Partitions.First two were in the same hole and the third about 1/4" out. Load development is mostly done, although I have not found the lands amd proper OAL yet. When do we hunt?

What does it do that the .270 fails at?? Recoil is the same. Heavy bullets have been replaced by better constructed bullets and the .270 shoots them all flatter... The 7x57 has roughly a 40 year head start and a few boat loads of used military bring backs...and yet it's popularity is still miles behind the .270. Don't get me wrong. I like the 7x57 and used it many years ago to kill a couple of blacktail bucks. But I wasn't Wow'ed in any way.... It's almost a .270. But not quite, and that's still a compliment!

My ballistics software has the ability to compute drift, drop, energy, and gayness.
So far I've been unable to find ANYthing that can hang with the .270 in terms of gayness. The other parameters are easy to top. You need new ballistic software, or you're not looking very hard, because the there are many cartridges more gay than the 270, e.g., anything 30 cal or Weatherby for starters....

Yeah but this is the average 270 user Yeah, and looking at the smile on your face, you're very proud of that 270 of yours. About time you came out of the closet... or gun safe.

It's been smoking the competition for 8 decades...how's that happen?

Remembered this old thread today, when I was shooting at our informal little range at the camp. Bumped my daughters 7mm-08 120TTSX load up to Barnes book max this morning, as she's 15 years old now and can handle a full power load in her 700. 43gr of H4895 makes 2,970fps from the 20" barrel and was drilling the 300yd hog gong with headshots. My father was standing there and mentioned that she should be able to kill damn near anything with that load, and my thoughts were "Yeah, it's almost like shooting a .compact 270". Still not really a bad place to be. But dang if those three little numerals don't prompt some opinions around here..... There have been some good ones.

I noticed myself saying that phrase again the other day, telling my father of my plans with 120's in a 7mm-08. It seems I've said or thought the same thing nearly every time I've worked up a good load for the "deer rifle du jour" and its superior ballistic gack. While it is simply not suitable for the loonies, the performance of the boring old .270Win runs right down the middle of what many of us think is perfect for general big game hunting.
The 25-284 I hunt with pushes 100gr E-tips at 3,350fps, which is not far off from a 270win with 110gr TTSX's at 3,300+fps.
My 260Rem was capable of 2,900 with 120's and my 257 Roberts wasn't far off from that. 130gr factory loads from a typical 22" .270win might be making 100fps more and pushing 10gr more bullet. About 5-10gr more powder is burned to do so.
My 7mmSAUM is basically a 280AI in a short action, which really isn't much more than burning 7-8gr more powder to get another 100fps, as compared to the 270win.
The .308win load I cooked up for my father was pushing 130gr TTSX's from his 20" barrel at 2,950 or so, which he claimed to basically be turning a 308 carbine into a 270win.
I'm not really saying anything many of us didn't really already know, but I still find it amusing that I keep comparing my new stuff to the .270 and am generally happy as long as it gets fairly close. If we are talking hunting bullets and sub-500yd shots, most anything from a scorcher 25-06 antelope load to a 160gr 7WSM elk load can be replicated fairly well using a vanilla .270win from Wally-World with a handful of good bullet choices and a few powders. I really hated saying that...... (grin)
Looks to me like a list of why you dont need a 270.

JOC shopped for his .270 WCF ammo at Wally world. ? ? ? How's that ? ? ? The FIRST W W I saw was in Fayetteville, Ark in 1974.... thought it had Wall decor. That was the 2nd WW anywhere. Now, whoop, I suppose you're being sarcastic ? ...that would help. Jerry

Except for the lack of rifle and ammo choices, and availability, probably the 6.5 PRC is the closest thing to "about like a 270". But I'd just get a 270 if I thought I needed to step up that high above the lowly 243.

There is all the 6.5 CM groupies and someone calls the 270 a homo sexual? That has to be the laugh of the last 2 centuries.
