Ok, so it's cold wet, windy etc here and I can't go chase bruins so I'm at home working and hanging at the Fire.

I have a 70 WSM that I'm thinking about rebarreling. Thinking here (scarry I know) but am thinking about a barrel twisted for the newer 165/170's etc.

Anyone from Fire land done anything like this as of yet?

Many thx

Being as how it's a WSM, it can't really be fixed. Won't hold a Newton wink
I have to say, it's hard to see the point. Who is making these bullets; whats the configuration, and how much twist is recommended? GD

Well, it's my dream so I don't exactly expect you to see the point... wink I take that by making that comment that you know what my reasoning is for it right...? Tha'd be kind of cool cause many times I surely don't... grin

A bullet called the Matrix, and I hear that Sierra's making a 170 I think it is.

I'm not a gunsmith but I'm not exactly new to shooting. If I was doing this to be practical I wouldn't. I'd use an 06 or a .270 and roll on as it's my opinion that if practical is one's gig then that's the best way to go. I've used them both a ton, just like to mess with other things as well. Hence why I use the 6/06, 7 Mashburn Super and the 338 WSM etc..

So have you worked with a quick twist 270 WSM and have something to add?

Thx

Hey, I'm messin' with ya. I'm just wondering what the length on those bullets might be. A sierra 170, configured like the typical Matchking, might stabilize in a ten and would certainly do so in a nine. You have to figure, that 170 Sierra would have to be similar in length and shape to the 175 7mm from the same maker. Performance would be similar (if not identical) to a 7 WSM with a 175. What configuration are you figuring on for the rifle (barrel length and weight)? I'm just curious because I like to see this sort of experimentation. I mean, we know what bullets of this length and BC work like in a 7mm or a 6.5. Always interesting to see what happens when you split the difference. Not interesting enough for me to buy a barrel and do it, mind you! GD

1:8", 23", .6" at the muzzle. Those 165 Matrixes are awesome, and Berger is bringing out a 170 VLD soon. I can't see a reason not to, that would be nirvana.

Have you seen the 180 Sierra yet Tanner? I want a bit more than .6 at the mzl this time. Probably want to go a bit more pipe than what the factory 70 tube has on it.

I would go 23" Tanner, and it'll go in my Hunter Edge compact handle.

May be one heck of a long range chuck and yote rig eh...grin?

The 165's will stabilize in a 10" twist, but I'd go 8.5" twist to stabilize the 170g Berger and 175gr Matrix.

Jord, I've seen that Berger recommends an 8 for their 170 but an 8.5" would do it in my mind too.

I don't think Sierra is making any LR 270 pills, dang fools... grin

Methinks it'd probably be my new favorite Campfire rig, stuffed in an Edge with a 3-20 with M1s or Target Turrets in Talleys up top. I'll call dibs on it right now!

Jordan you say that the 10 will handle the 165', I'm a bit skeptical that they will. Should try them in my 9 twist .270 that I have now. But you say that it will, I take that to mean that you've actually tried it right?

Tanner, I think I'd go 8 or 8.5 as well.

Tanner, what powder did you run with the 165's? I'd think that 22 or 7828 could do allright, maybe 25?

Seems to me that the 165s are doing just fine stability wise here at 7300', so far.

I think an 8" would be just fine, from 140s all the way up to the big sleeks ones!

I've run Retumbo, but I'm thinking that '25 or 7828 would kick butt too. '22 seems a bit fast for this bullet, but it's always worth a poke or two through the chrony!

Heck, even the 140s beat the heck out of the 1,000yd steel out of my 270ShortDog... grin

I have thought about doing this as well Mark. Back when the Wildcat bullets were made in Canada I thought about a 270 WSM built around their 169.5 ULD bullet. I think you are right on the twist needed.
I have a 270 Allen Mag and it is built on a 9 twist Lilja and it spins them a wee bit faster than the 270 WSM.
I think this is a better project than the 6.5 WSM. I working with one of those right and it has been an excercise in frustration to this point.

No, sir. I haven't played with that bullet, myself. But I've read several reports of guys stabilizing the 165 in 10" twists from 500 feet ASL, to over 6000 feet. Marshall at Matrix also told me that they'd do fine in a 10" twist barrel. A 9" twist would give you a little wiggle room in the cold winter temps at low elevations, though. wink

The 175 requires an 8.5" twist, as told to me by Marshall, and I'm thinkin that would spin up the 170 Berger alright, as well.

Dober, I'm sure you've given it the full thought, but I'd be curious to know how much COAL that M70 box will handle? If I recall right, I think I've got mine seated at around 2.920", and that's just a skosh off the lands as my BigSky has a pretty short throat.

Thx Jordan, good to hear that it's being done.

Tanner, yeah that crept into my mind. Too many choices, I may just put the "Fat Bastard" (338 WSM) barrel back on it and turn it into a timber rig as that barrels a shooter.

Many thx for all the toughts.

Heck with the Fat Bastard, Short Dog needs a shot!

Maybe if you order up a tube you'll have it just in time as the FB spout will be shot out? grin

Let me know if you want to try the 175s and not order a whole box. I've got some to send you and Bob.

Mark bob beck and I have been discussing the 270 170eol lately. I would run 1:8.5 for sure. This bullet is going to be amazing for the 270.
