Mile High,
Great point in regards to packing out. Never really thought about it in the meat per day way, it is just myself and my wife with occasionally a friend or 2 joining for meals. I could see how 300lbs plus could be more than needed over a year period.

If you see a herd strung out and moving, don't shoot the 1st one. She's lead cow and she got the job by being the meanest, raunchiest old bitch in the herd.

I can tell you from experience that this is true! If I have any choice at all I take the third or fourth one back. I also do not like to shoot cows with calves, but with a large herd its nearly impossible to tell which calf belongs to which cow. Some have told me that they are careful as to how far from the road they are. My motto has always been, to shoot them first then worry about getting them out.

Most cow elk will end up a lot smaller than 300 lbs. Happens but not often.!

In any cow hunt, the best cow is the one that
A. Falls closest to the road.
B. Gives you the first/best shot.

Simply put, dont over think it. If a cow gives you a good shot, kill her. Dont sit there and try to pick out the best tenderloins, kill one and then enjoy the tenderloins.

This is good advice. I did shoot the biggest elk in a group of about 300 once, she was over 20 years old and was like eating cardboard. Still, you are probably safe to pick a lone cow regardless of size, there can't be that many old, cardboard cows out there...

I try not to shoot the lead cow---not because she'll be tough eating but because she has the smarts/experience to get the group thru the winter. I try for a dry cow, at least one that doesn't have a calf at her side. Bob
