Can someone who knows how to do so properly, describe the procedure for me. I have tried by using lead bullets on a cleaning rod, their lube grooves filled with compound. I am working on a 336 Marlin in 35 Remington with the nastiest tight spot right about where the fore end stops. When the gun was new it fouled horribly and you could find a constriction with the cleaning rod and a patch. After much shooting and cleaning (including a protracted one shot and clean routine) I thought the spot was gone. While slugging in prep for ordering a bullet mould yesterday, it turns out it's still there. Might explain why after about a half dozen shots it needs to be cleaned to keep it on paper! I lapped like crazy, doing more harm than good no doubt. You cannot feel it even with a tight patch, but push that slug through there.......Also has a snug area forward of the chamber at right at the muzzel.

'Gunsmithing' by Roy Dunlap. He describes the procedure in great detail.

You would have thought I'd have bought it already what with the size gun-book book collection I have now, but, alas. I will look for it this weekend. I even have a gift certificate at Amazon. Thanks, MColeman!

than welcome. You'll find that the book is somewhat dated when you get into it but not so much that it won't be a great help to you in many areas. The end result of his efforts are still the same but we have many more tools/materials at our disposal than the author did. When he wrote the book there were no synthetic stocks, for instance.

There is a formula in there for using ammonium nitrate, red devil lye (caustic soda) and water for a hot bluing solution. It works as well as anything I've ever used but be advised that when you mix it the strongest ammonia you've ever encountered is released. You can't hold your breath and run far enough or fast enough to escape. Clears sinuses like you wouldn't believe!

Roy Dunlap? Are you sure it wasn't by his brother Izzy? His sister Betty? How many laps could a Dunlap lap if a Dunlap could lap laps?

Yooooou're pullin' my leg, ain't ya?
