Just so you know that we don't sit inside in front of the telly in the middle of winter down here in the Southern Hemisphere, we went out for a hunt the other weekend. I shot a Red spiker (no pics, so it really didn't happen), but my son Chris (the .223 stunt shooter) shot another Red spiker and I had a camera this time. Crappy pics, as it was a bit misty and the light was strange. Plain jane .223, 70 grain Speer, high shoulder (the mist stuffed up his guesstimate of range), dropped on the spot. The bullet blew up on the heavy bone (as I would have expected - however we have had excellent results with these projectiles if you can keep them a bit lower in the chest and avoid the big bones) , but he wasn't going anywhere. I can assure you that the back steaks are real tasty.

MikeNZ; Thanks for sharing your winter hunt with us, it's great to see both a different climate and how fellow 'Fire members hunt. Please pass along congratulations to your son on the good shooting and the tasty looking stag. You sir, get my customary tip of the hat for taking the time and making sure the family hunt took place and lasting memories were made. Well done to you. Thanks again and all the best to you and yours in the upcoming week. Regards, Dwayne

Whether or not yours really happened is irrelevant. Your son did well and being a proud father is cool.

If it's legal, and it works, you can't knock it.
Nice going.

Exellent!!! How much does a 'spike' red weigh on average? The largest rocky mountain 'spike' elk the cousin of the red deer, I killed weighed 275 lbs. hanging skinned quarters..... They usually tip the scales around 200 lbs +/- there abouts in that form. I know, I have no pics of it so mine did not really happen neither

Congratulations to you and your son. As a frequent hunter on our NW coast, I have found that fog and rain do not always make the best pictures.
When I first saw the picture I thought it was a small spike elk. How big on the hoof would that animal be, 300#'s?

Live weight of a red spiker ranges from 200 to 300 pounds.
I'd say this one's probably under 200 gutted.

Nice, I know a guy with some land up that way. Might have to head up with him some time. They've got Fallow and Reds on their place according to him.
