Hello, I just aquired a Leupold 3-9x40 AO Gloss Duplex scope on an older rifle. The scope does not have any of the traditional markings on it such as Vari-x.... What is this scope and what is it compatable with?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Leupold started using an alpha/letter in the serial number in 1974.

Leupold scopes made between 1974 and 1992 had alpha/letter prefix E thru Z, not including I, O, and Q.

Leupold scopes made between 1993 and 2012 had alpha/letter suffix A thru W, not including I, O, and Q.

My older, pre-1974, Leupold scopes have taken on a "plum/purple" tint.

According to Leupold, FAQ #3 under "resources", the Vari-X series of scopes are comparable to the currentl Rifleman series.

Thanks..it appears mine are pre 74. They have not turned plum yet but they have not seen the light of day in 20 years.

Thanks for the info

Whenever I get an old Leupold scope, I send it to Leupold to be cleaned and function checked. My oldest Leupold is a 3-9x40, SN 889xx, that came to me on a late 1960s vintage Remington 700 BDL in 6mm.

jeff, measure the objective of your oldest, you sure it is not a 3x9x42, a lot of the old pre prefix were 42 mm objectives.....unless you have 2 setting next to each other you do not notice it. lenny

I don't recall ever paying for anything except the shipping and insurance.
