I'm going on a trip to the Nebraska Sandhills this fall for a combo Mule deer Whitetail hunt. Was told the Mule deer go 250-300 lbs. I always took my 300 RUM on all my hunts and have been shooting the 168 Berger VLD's and they have never let me down. Just wanted to take my new Encore 25-06. I loaded 110gr Accubonds last fall and they avg. just under an inch at 100. Only had a chance to take one doe with it and it took an instant dirt nap at about 265. Would like to have used it a few more times but a already filled my buck and other doe tag in archery. I've been asking a few people what they think i should take and they all think i'm nuts for wanting to take the 25. I've killed so many deer with the so called little 243 and i'm completly confident in the 25. Just wanted to hear what you fellas thought on this subject and why or why not i should take the 25-06 and if i should stick with the AB or choose a different bullet.

Thanks Roy

The .25-'06 is a great deer round. One of the best!

That 110gr Accubomb is pretty awesome, too. i've seen a few deer taken with it, and none were very happy about it.

What could be a sadder way to end a life than to die having never hunted with great dogs, good friends and your family?

I don't like them myself, but I like two holes in a deer. They killed well enough, but would often be found just under the hide, even on small whitetails. I spent a lot of time tracking when using that bullet in areas of thick cover and eventually moved to the E-tip. Maybe it was just my batch of bullets, as many others have said they had no problems with penetration. It wouldn't be much concern if hunting open country where you could see a deer fall after the shot/deathrun.

Now with even more aplomb

I've killed a few Deer with them and most required tracking. Fetched to the 100 ttsx and that stopped.

25.06 will work fine, may need to change your bullet preference?

^ George has seen a few things die with the .25-06, and the MD and caribou grow pretty big up this way. wink

I've also seen a fair few things die via flight .25-06 (as well as the .243), and some of them were done in with the 110gr AB, including some MD. As I said, our deer are pretty much as large as you find them anywhere, and the bullet works just fine. I prefer the 100gr TTSX, and was totally happy with the performance on WT and MD, up to a very large black bear with that bullet.

Take the .243 and 80gr TTSX. The .25-06 is too much gun grin

It continually amazes me how tough these internet deer are compared to those in real life.

They have worked well on desert mule deer in my .257 AI. Three deer killed, all with one shot. Only one moved out of its tracks, stumbling maybe 10-12 yards before it went down. I will add that I have never had to track a deer out here, so blood trails don't mean much to me. It will be the same way in the Sand Hills--they will have to go a long ways to die out of sight.

Roy,
So the general "Wisconsin wisdom" extends to PA too? grin
I'd not fret that caliber/bullet combo one bit. I'm partial to the 100gr TSX in the 25 but the 110accubomb isn't bouncing off even the biggest deer in the world.

In fact, if you're on the fence, take the 25 for spite to prove a point to your local yokels. laugh

Pretty much my sentiments. I love the TTSX, but if the Accubond was the last bullet in the world to run in my .257 ROY, Id carry it with confidence as well.

Maybe a 5 or 6 year old buck may go that lower limit, but very rarely the upper limit. That is pretty much B.S. 70% of the deer taken during rifle season in Nebraska average 1.5 to 2.5 years old. That taint long enough to go 300.
Take the 25.06 shoot 115 BTs, or 117 grs Sierra Pro-Hunter. Launch it at 3000 fps with a good dose of RL22 same hold to 300 yrds(mid shoulder) 2" high at 100, dead on at 200, 6.5 to 7" low at 300 with an average 16" kill zone you will whack our big ninja deer with no problem. Been whacking corn and bean fed Nebraska ninja deer for 28 years, 23 with the 25.06 with that load, and the first 5 with a 41 rem mag Blackhawk. Seen a few eastern Nebraska W/T that would go that size, but as stated earlier they just dont live that long on average.

You buy the 521.00 tag???????

Don't mean anything against your friends, but I'd seriously question the experience of anyone who'd say that of the 25-06 on deer.

Check out my post on your projectile of choice; it'll give you confidence:

I'd not hesitate a moment to take that rifle on that hunt!

110 AB, , 100 TTSX, or 120 Partition (my favorite) all make chit die if put in the right spot.

All will smash bone as well.

Very few bullets will let you down if you do your part.

It will just bounce off of them Roy, better take the UM laugh

I'd even take a 100g NBT with complete confidence in open country. Put it through the ribs and it will be picture time.

I normally shoot 100 grain nosler ballistic tips for deer and cant remember ever keeping one in a deer. These have all been from 25-06s 25-06 ackley and a couple 257 weatherbys. I have even shot a few with the plane jane 100 grain hornady interlock and never kept one inside a deer. I did shoot the 110 grain accubonds and went back to the ballistic tips as they are cheaper and couldnt tell any difference on deer. If you wanting a cheap bullet to practice tons and still hammer deer than I would shoot the 100 grain nosler ballistic tip or the 100 grain hornady interlock.

PM me with your questions and I will try to answer them as best I can. I have hunted them off and on since 1980.
