I my 35 caliber case it's a 358 Winchester, and i am running the 200 gn TSX's at 2700 fps with H-322 from a 22" barreled Ruger Hawkeye, and when those are shot up, the same velocity via RL-7 for the 200 gn TTSX's.

Both are very accurate in my rifle.

200 gr Hornady spire points, 225 Sierra and the 225 Nosler Partition, all at around 2600 to 2650 in the .350 Mag and the .35 Whelen. In the Whelen I have also used the discontinued 225 Ballistic Tip.

The usual result of a hit with any of the above bullets usually results in either a deer DOTS or a 40-50 yard blood trail that looks like it was left with a garden hose.

Bob, although not needed for deer, they are very accurate and have given aproxx thumb sized exit wounds on deer inside 100 yds. so far.

Have not shot the TTSX's into game yet.

I've only taken caribou with mine but my bullet of choice is the 250 grain Partition. The results were much the same as the above poster. A water hose blood trail is a good description. Meat damage was minimal.

I'm shooting 250 Speer Hotcors right at 2500 fps in my 35 Whelen. I tend to lean towards the heavier bullets in any caliber and just shoot that one load at everything. Have use this bullet for deer, elk, and moose and have NOTHING to complain about. If I had a 358 Winchester or bigger I would look at the 225 Accubonds as well.

.358 Winchester - 200gr Hornady PSP @ 2450fps

.35 Remington - 200gr Corelokt RN @ 2100fps

I just bought some 225 Accubonds for the .358 Win to try.

When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

is there a better whitetail gun for woods hunting than the Marlin lever in 35Rem?

I grew up with this rifle and a very good rifle for under 200 yds witha peep or fixed 4 power scope

Hey Bob,

My fav deer slug is the Hornady Interlock 180 Gr. SP SSF, (#3505) in a Model 7 35 Remington @ 2400 +/- 50fps. Mild recoil but plenty of thump for TX Whities or Mulies.

I also like the 158 gr. Hornady XTP Jacketed Hollow Points at 2100 fps and would not hesitate drawing down on a whitetail at less than 100yrds, however I normally save these for plinking, pigs, vermin, stumps, rocks, and cactus. Turtles are an absolute MUST. These from a 7600 Carbine in 35 Rem.

Here's a trio of 35 Rem fun guns.

Hope this helps.

I love .35 threads... mine is a .358, and it's my main blacktail rifle.

The 200-gn Horn SP is a great deer bullet. That said I've heard they changed it? I've been using the 225-gn NP lately. It's boringly effective on deer and easy on the meat, and it extends the range of the cartridge significantly IMHO.

Supposedly Nosler has a 200-gn Accubond coming for us. Driven to 2700 fps that could be great.

The CENTER will hold.

...beginning to wonder if I am worrying too much about expansion... As long as it's .35 and above and goes all the way through it seems the deer is going down shortly....

Thanks for all the replies and keepem' commin'....

At 358 Win/35 Whelen velocities, you positively do not need to spend the money for premiums. I have taken more deer with the 200 Horn SP than any other bullet, have yet to catch one. Only ever had to track one and that was my fault, hit it too far back, great blood trail.

That said, the mentioned 200 Horn SP, the 180 and 220 Speer HC, 225 Nosler BT or the 225 Sierra's all make fine deer loads. Pick one and go hunting!

I agree 110% on you Gentleman's idea that the premiums are not needed in this case, but in the case of a man with so many rifles, does it make since to load a particular cartridge with the best possible bullet you can get to shoot in it?

My reasoning behind that is, for any particular game animal I may choose to hunt with the 358 Winchester a 200 gn TSX/TTSX should give all the penetration and killing power the little round is capable of providing.

One max load for each rifle is a lot easier and simpler for me to keep up with. smile

For what it is worth, about 12 years ago I bought some 200 gr X bullets to test along with the 200 Horns I had been shooting in my 358 Win. Aprox 2450 fps MV for both loads, chronographed.

Used wet & dry newprint stacked in layers. I did not measure exact penetration as the both bullets penetrated almost identical, it was certainly less than 1 inch difference.

My disticnt impression was that the Horn created a better "wound" channel thru the medium than the X. Decided then & there that the 200 Horn would do all that needed to be done with a 200 grain bullet at those speeds. YMMV.
