In two different magazines I've seen have short paragraphs about a new Marlin 336 ss with laminated stock and 24" barrel. Now I'm seeing that Hornady is bring out a extended range leveraction ammo line 30/30, 35 Rem,45/70,444 Marlin and .450 Marlin. The Hornady ammon will probably be good, but will the 24" Barrel really help with longer range ammo?

Judging by the way they are introducing them both, I have a hunch that the ammo was specifically formulated to be used with the longer barrel of the XLR rifles. Probably using slower powders than normal. The longer barrel will provide some increase in velocity in and of itself, on the order of 20-25 fps per inch but most of the gain has to be from the powder formulation. It will be interesting to try some and see if the real world matches the ad claims.

Will the longer barrel have any advantage with standard 30/30 ammo ?

The 24" barrel 30-30 shows a decent gain against the standard 20".
