My son and I decided to celebrate the 4th by going for a high country hike/fishing trip today. We got an early start and were heading west on I-70. Just past the Highway 40 turn off to Winter Park and before Georgetown at about 6 am, I saw what I thought was a dead deer in the east bound lane. I slowed down and told my son to check it out also. It was a very large grey canine and I immediately thought wolf. I glanced forward and saw another large canine also dead on the road. But the kicker was the jet black and lanky wolf like critter that was trotting on the shoulder between the two dead animals.

My son and I are both convinced that these were wolves. When we came back through about 6 hours later the carcasses were removed. I wanted to post this and hope that fellow fire members will watch for any news stories as this was the same general area that the wolf was killed on I-70 a few years back.

Son outfished me again but still a good day.

Thats the type of sighting that would have me exiting at Georgetown and turning around to get pictures.

Thanks Sonora, I'll fill that out and send to DOW. I was wanting to hit the trailhead and was concerned with pulling over on I-70 due to the guard rail on that side where they were at. Looking back, I should have done a drive by and had my son shoot a few pics real quick. Hoping that whoever picked them up has contacted DOW. It was really a surprise seeing them.

O/C they do... but inevitably you're getting them one way or another.

Thanks, I didn't know about the form.

I swear I saw one this past 3rd season. Woke up one morning and walked out of the tent and across the very large meadow in the snow I saw what I thought was a yote. I got the bino's out and it was way to big for a yote. I am convinced it was a wolf.

I made my way over there later in the day and there were large tracks in the snow.

This was up in unit 15.

They are there. I saw one several years ago right along I-70 at the summit. Now here I sit in "wolf country" (Montana) and haven't a one.

DOW replied today. They said a local resident had 3 domestic wolves get out and that is what they were. If that is the case, I guess I have some serious concerns about how soon we will have wolves running around if all it takes is some whacknuts to release their pets.

At least it confirmed they were wolves.

I wonder if they're just saying that? The DOW sure doesn't want it getting around that we have wolves.

Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

All for more reason to have your truck or car rifle handy. Just shoot the dam things.

Kill them before they get a foot hold. If you want to keep hunting deer and elk.
