Trying to picture the geometries that would facilitate such a thing.... Maybe a shoulder holster (it says he was off-duty)? Then she'd still have to get her arms way around him, and you still have the problem of it being in the holster. Odd.....

my guess is that there was some hanky panky, or cutting up, or playing around going on.
Woman is shot, and cops are calling it an AD to cover up the cop's misfeasance or malfeasance.

Had to be a shoulder holster. Still, story does not quite pass the smell test.

It was probably a horizontal shoulder holster, which would put the muzzle against her chest when she hugged him from behind. What an awful tragedy.

I have never felt comfortable carrying in such a holster because of the muzzle sweep issue. Also, many of those holsters use only a safety strap to hold the weapon and straps can come loose. I've seen guns fall out of such holsters on a couple of occasions. An AD in this situation is not impossible, and it appears that there were many witnesss.

The handgun was probably a S&W M&P .40, which is what DPD issues.

Pretty much if a cop is involved, its gotta be the cops fault for any situation that happened.....or a cover up for sure....

that has been the case in some instances, yes. In this story, it is hard to picture anything other than a cover up going on. The cop in question was there, his gun discharged, and a woman was shot.
Like it or not, there is, without a doubt, some connection .

I am going to throw the BS flag. It could only happen one of two ways without pulling the trigger.

1. There is a mechanical problem with the built in firing pin block and it allowed the firing pin to go forward. A firing pin block is an inherent safety feature of almost any semiautomatic handgun a police department would use. It requires the trigger to be pulled in order to fire.

2. The gun was an older gun without a firing pin block or a revolver with a weak firing pin spring, and even then it would require a very hard jar to give it enough inertia for the firing pin to be thrown forward.

Now, I have seen and had an older 1911 go off in a flap holster when the vehicle hit the bottom of a ditch. We had about 40% of 1911s with very weak firing pin springs in later tear downs and checks.

The hammer was cocked and locked. Damn near tore the gun up. Slug hit the low/high range lever of a military 2 1/2 ton, jacket went in my leg and bullet core into the firewall. Holster was flowered out at the bottom just like a cartoon.

Wasn't a shoulder holster.

according to witnesses this was a freak accident.

According to the second part of the link it was a department issued holster around his waist.

If it was a hip holster and she got shot in the chest....Hmmmm
