The 356 is fading quickly into history. A very well built middle-bore that failed to become popular in the marketplace.

I have an opportunity to purchase a lightly used .356 for $600. but am wary about losing money over a period of time. I'm hoping to own a rifle that will not drop in value because ammo availability is a concern.

Do you think these hunting rifles will jump in value same as the older 348 Winchesters?

If you handload, ammo will never be an issue. Plenty of brass and bullets out there.

The .356 is a powerhouse. Flat out stops deer, hogs, bears and the like in a most efficient way. Elk and Moose would drop quickly too. A rear peep and it is one handy hammer!
The asking price is a good one too, for a Winchester Big Bore 94!

That's a fair price for a good rifle. I wouldn't expect it to leap up in value but I also wouldn't be concerned with it dropping in value either. Most folks (myself included) that shoot non-mainstream calibers aren't concerned with the availability of factory ammo.

When the 356 Win. was dropped by Winchester I bought 500 new cases. I won't be needing any anytime soon. $600 is the lowest I have seen for one of those in a long time.

I decided to pass on the 356 Winchester. I'm not focused on handloading at this time.

Thanks for all the great responces.

It's actually one of the firearms(Big Bore Winnie 94)/calibers I would love to have and actively look for. But they're rare birds. Whether they go up or down in value would be more problematical if we were talking serious money, but at $600 heck, shoot the moon.

I would LOVE to have a marlin 336 or m94 in 356win...or 375win...or 32win spl.

I love the 30-30, but those odd balls are just cool!

What I've found, in most cases, is although there may not be a large following of people looking for the oddball stuff, those that are, seem to be serious buyers. I do think that most who like to play with the "slightly off the beaten track" firearms are handloaders, and if the components can be had, they seem to be willing to pay for them. Besides, it's always fun to have something that not everyone else has. I love to find the oddball stuff at reasonable prices, I generally play with them for awhile, and then send them down the road after I've started to lose interest. If I've gotten into it right, you'll generally get your money back if not make some on it.

LOL, I'm right there with ya. It's just flat cool to have something few others have, and there is always a following, albiet small. That is where GB is nice, you can list it there, and find those that are looking. I recently parted ways with a 7mm Gradle Express that I had bought because the price was right. After playing a bit with it, I listed it mainly because I had other stuff I wanted to free up some money for. I didn't have alot of watchers, but those that were, were serious about it. I ended up taking a trade on it, and put a few bucks back in my pocket. I've seen modern firearms, in odd caliber and configurations bring out of this world prices.

I have a like new .356 xtr. If its been shot I can't tell it. I put mounts on it but haven't scoped it yet. Here is a pic but not a good one. It's the one at the bottom. If interested I can get more pics. I need $750 out of it.

Thanks. Bought it with several others from an estate. Ammo is a problem for me though.

I would look for some of the custom loaders for it, Superior and such. Cases are still pretty available, so I am sure you could find a company willing to load for it.

I wished I wouldn't have just bought another rifle, as I would scoop it up in a heartbeat. They are very sought after rifles and not easy to find in that condition. Good luck with it, I hope you find some rounds for it. They are usually great shooters.

You have the rifle.
Brass is readily available.
The cartridge is easy to load.
Looks like an easy decision.

I don't do any hand loading. I really like the gun and will keep it if I can't get a fair price. Thanks for all the help.
