Is Kimber the only supplier of "aftermarket" bottom metal

Really?
I'll be curious to see how it works out.
I doubt it's going to be easy to convert the stock though...

Just remember that when the stock breaks, you have to send the rifle back for them to fit a new one. Last time I checked it was north of $600.

Only Kimber makes it, period.
I would have thought that was obvious.

Seems like kind of a goofy project. I think the integrity of the stock would be totally compromised after humming away on it with a dremel. Plus... blind mag is the schit!

I think if tedhorn knows what he is doing and has some experience laying fiber and resin, he should be just fine. I agree with you though Tanner, I prefer blind mags myself.

Getting the cut centered on the magazine could be a booger though. The beauty with Fiberglass or Kevlar is you can fix a mistake.

Ted, if you do this it would be great to document it in pictures and post it.
Agreed on the Dremel too...

mill? what, if not a dremel? Just curious about this, I've got no experience in grinding on fiberglass stocks like the Lil Sky...

Well if tedthorn is asking the question, I assume he already called Kimber (800-880-2418) and they declined to sell. Also here is the response to the same inquiry by "Headache" who was a Kimber engineer. https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth..._Kimber_bottom_metal_questio#Post5880967

I don't know much about machining Kevlar or any composites
I build injection molds for a living.....26 years Journynan Molmaker
I've milled pockets for BM in a couple 1st gen TI's and thought the two might be along the same lines as lay-up

If the Montana's came with a floor plate, then those would be all the hunting rifles I'd own. I think adl stocks suck in the worst way, imo.

I am curious what makes the construction of the Kimber Montana stock so different from Mcmillan, Brown, Bansner etc, that make several of you suspect the strength and integrity after opening up the magazine well out the bottom?
tedthorn, before starting, I would compare a Classic and a Montana carefully, I suspect the round cross section of the Montana stock will give you problems at the corners and sides of the floorplate frame. Nothing that can't be filled and shaped, but it may not be a direct drop in.
As an aside, CDI makes detachable mag bottom metal for the 8400s
