I was wondering if, when a scope get discontinued, the manufacturer has the ability to spin up another run if demand was there for a limited number of units. Thinking specifically of the Conquest 4x, 2.5-8x, and the 1.5-whatever it was, but I guess it's the same thing with the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44s that Doug gets. Anybody know?

If truly discontinued then the manufacturer doesn't usually produce that product anymore.
You might be able to still find some floating around because of surplus when discontinued.
Odds are there was a good reason(s) that they stopped production.
I'm sure they have the ability if need be, but if they could justify producing a few, then they wouldn't have discontinued them at least to the best of my knowledge, but you never know.

We have discussed those scopes with Zeiss and they discontinued them as they could no longer produce them at the price point, or close to it, as they were and did not feel it would be a seller with a price $150.00 - $200.00 higher than it was. Zeiss does now offer a 30mm tube version in a 1.2-5x36 & 2-8x32 Vortex still produces their Viper 6.5-20x44 but no longer offers it with the V-Plex reticle. They have agreed to produce their Viper 6.5-20x44 V-Plex exclusively for Camera Land as well as their Viper 2-7x32 in both V-Plex and BDC

usually, when a project for any given production item, from scope to guns to cars or whatever (I have personal experience in the car-thing) is begun, there is a projection of the tooling costs and how long it takes to recoup those costs before major upgrades to the tooling are required. thus, items go out of production due to tooling/manufacturing costs going up, tooling requiring major overhaul, or technology advancements/manpower costs changing. the manpower costs usually also contain dollar exchanges for foreign ade goods. I would bet that fluctuations in the dollar exchange and raw materil pricing were major reasons that those items could not be produced at a decent price point. What usually happens is, the tooling is mothballed. There is a cost to storage though, so in some years (depends on the item, the market, etc.) the tooling is either devalued to the point of scrap, or those other costs have changed enough to make tooling up for a limited run or a short-production run feasible. the leupold 3x long tube is a good example of mothballed tooling being put back into production.

iambrb,
Actually, the tooling for the original 3x Leupold had disappeared long ago--one of the reasons it took so long for the new 3x to appear, despite constant requests from hunters.
But your other points are valid!

Vortex still produces their Viper 6.5-20x44 but no longer offers it with the V-Plex reticle.
I still wish they offered this in the target dot reticle!

Sure would like to be able to get one or two more of the 1" 2.5-8x Conquests, though.

We are expecting our next shipment in Sept.
